H1N1 Surge
"Doctors are reporting a severe form of H1N1 that goes straight to the lungs, causing severe illness in otherwise healthy young people and requiring expensive hospital treatment, the World Health Organization said Friday.
Some countries are reporting that as many as 15 percent of patients hospitalized with the new H1N1 pandemic virus need intensive care, further straining already overburdened healthcare systems, WHO said in an update on the pandemic.
"During the winter season in the southern hemisphere, several countries have viewed the need for intensive care as the greatest burden on health services," it said.
"Preparedness measures need to anticipate this increased demand on intensive care units, which could be overwhelmed by a sudden surge in the number of severe cases." -- Reuters

New Report On Swine Flu (H1N1)

In an e-mail to students Monday night, CMU officials said there have been 18 students in the last week who have contacted Student Health Services with flu-like symptoms.
University officials said they do not test for the H1N1 virus at CMU because the tests are too expensive, and it takes too long to get test results back from Centers for Disease Control. By the time the test results come back, the patient in question has already recovered from their flu symptoms, officials said.
"Students who live off campus have been asked to stay home and avoid contact with others, while students in residential housing who do not come from areas near Pittsburgh are being taken care of by staff members in Student Health Services, Housing, Dining and Student Affairs," a CMU e-mail said. "In accordance with the latest directive from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), students will remain in isolation until they are fever-free for 24 hours after they have stopped taking fever-reducing medications."
One student told Channel 11 News that half of the people on her floor are sick. "I just got over a cold. I think it's because orientation was so overwhelming. And we shook like 1,500 people's hands," said CMU freshman Olivia Harris. "Bad idea."
Another student said he just returned from India, where they're shutting down an entire city due to the swine flu. He said he appreciates the university taking the necessary precautions.
"I think it's good informative e-mail and people should know about it," said Shashank Pradahn.
To reduce the risk of an outbreak, health officials urge students, faculty and staff who feel ill with flu-like symptoms to monitor their temperature. Those who develop a fever of 100 degrees or more should isolate themselves from others and stay out of classes, officials said. They are also urged to immediately call Student Health Services.
On Tuesday, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that a massive school closing wouldn't stop the spread of the swine flu virus, saying vaccinations must be the defense against a menace that one report said could infect up to half of the population.
"What we know is that we have the virus right now traveling around the United States," Sebelius said in a nationally broadcast interview. "And having children in a learning situation is beneficial ... What we learned last spring is that shutting a school down sort of pre-emptively doesn't stop the virus from spreading."
Sebelius appeared on NBC's "Today" show one day after a special presidential advisory panel presented a grim report to the Obama White House, saying among other things that a "plausible scenario" for the United States later this year is wide-scale infections, possibly 30,000 to 90,000 deaths, mostly among young children and young adults, and perhaps as many as 300,000 sick enough to require intensive care unit treatment at hospitals.
The fall resurgence in swine flu could occur as early as September, with the beginning of the school term, and the peak infection may occur in mid-October, officials said.

New Interrogations Unit

The Power of Prayer
An email that was sent to me from a friend...
SPECIAL GROCERY LIST
Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face,
walked into a grocery store.
She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if
he would let her charge a few groceries.
She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they
had seven children and they needed food.
John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his
store at once.
Visualizing the family needs, she said: 'Please, sir! I will bring you the
money just as soon as I can.'
John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge
account at his store..
Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation
between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he
would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in
a very reluctant voice, 'Do you have a grocery list?'
Louise replied, 'Yes sir.' 'O.K' he said, 'put your grocery list on the
scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in
groceries.'
Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse
and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid
the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.
The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales
went down and stayed down.
The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said
begrudgingly, 'I can't believe it.'
The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the
other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued=2 0to
put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more.
The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of
paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement.
It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said:
'Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.'
The grocer gave her the groceries that he had
gathered and stood in stunned silence.
Louise thanked him and left the store. The other customer handed a
fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said; 'It was worth every penny of it.
Only God Knows how much a prayer weighs.'
THE POWER: When you receive this, say a prayer. That's all you have to do.

Email Spam is Not Nugatory!
Third-party groups and their online petitions might not be the only reason people across the country received unsolicited e-mails from the White House, even though that's the explanation given by the administration.
The White House told FOX News that third-party groups sending online petitions to the official administration Web site could be to blame for a rash of e-mails that have gone out to people who never requested them. The theory is that these groups are including the names and e-mails of members and petition-signers along with the petitions themselves, in turn embedding those e-mails into the White House distribution list.
The White House has already taken steps to add filters to its site in a bid to reduce the number of people who are receiving these e-mails.
But online petitions are not the only culprit, and critics say the White House still has some explaining to do.
Several people who received the White House e-mails have told FOX News they're not members of any organization and have not been advocating for any cause. And they're puzzled over how the White House got their information.
"I find it very disturbing and a little scary to say the least," said Sarah Griffith, who got a widely circulated e-mail on health care reform from senior adviser David Axelrod last week. "I have no idea how they got my e-mail address, and they have it."

Worlds Longest Conga Line
While waking up this morning, feeling like I needed to go online and find a hurricane tracker to discover if we were going to still be in Utah or if our state was blown down to Texas overnight (if you live in Utah, you know what I'm talking about, and I know that we cannot actually have a hurricane), I discovered a little useless trivia that's out on The Net (really, I know it doesn't take much to "discover" the plethora of useless trivia online)...
There's word that the longest Conga line was created at Lollapalooza this month.
Dan Deacon, a name synonymous with the one man band, at this year's Lollapalooza, "organizes the festival’s longest conga line, which snakes its way through a tunnel of upraised arms around the northern half of Hutchinson Field. Ain’t no party like a Dan Deacon party. Best set of the festival so far." Leisureblogs.ChicagoTribune.com
Actually, even though that sounds like a lot of fun, "Calle Ocho earned an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records when 119,986 people formed the world’s longest conga line on March 13, 1988." LynxLee
For some 1988 may fire sirens off of being ages ago. However, to those of us who graduated from high school in the Chicago (Lollapalooza) area, it burns in memory like just reminiscent of yesterday.

A racially charged activist group called “Color of Change” founded by Van Jones, a special advisor to the Obama Administration, is trying to silence popular radio and Fox News personality Glenn Beck by calling for a boycott of Beck’s TV advertisers. On July 28th, Beck made a comment on the Fox & Friends morning show about Obama’s reaction to the arrest of Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. During the discussion of “Professor-Gate,” Beck connected the President’s past association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright to Obama’s comment that Cambridge police officer, Sgt. James Crowley, acted stupidly. Though Beck acknowledged most of the Obama administration is in fact white, he concluded that the President’s world experience made him a “racist.” Now “Color of Change” has bullied at least five of Beck’s big advertisers -- SC Johnson, Progressive Insurance, Geico, Procter & Gamble and Nexus Lexis -- to pull their ads from Beck’s national cable program. Jones, the founder of “Color of Change,” was named Special Advisor for Green Jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality -- a key administrative post -- this past March."HumanEvents.com

In fact, the October 23, 2006 issue of Time magazine ran a cover story with Obama's picture and the headline, "Why Barack Obama Could Be The Next President." In another edition, Time magazine named Obama one of "the world's most influential people," and included him on a list of 20 "Leaders and Revolutionaries." What's behind the media hype?
The first thing that must be said is that, true to form, reporters are acting like Democrats, which they probably are. After Obama won the Democratic nomination for Senator in 2004, one of Obama's opponents in the primary, Illinois' Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, called him "The Tiger Woods of the Democratic Party." The love affair for Obama even extends to the senior Senator from Illinois, Dick Durbin, who started an online petition urging Obama to run for President. It is posted on Durbin's campaign website. Like a schoolgirl with a crush, Durbin starts his "Run, Barack, Run!" message with, "As many of you may know, I'm a huge Barack Obama fan." But having Durbin in his camp may not be the best thing going. After all, Durbin was forced to apologize for smearing U.S. personnel as murderers and torturers. Well, isn't that just so beautiful. Can you feel the love? Well, here is another side from the beginning of the presidency.
"With regulatory-minded lawmakers set to oversee commerce and communications, and the credit crisis compelling even Republicans to rethink laissez-faire, there will probably be more power to oversee marketing at the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission, and more rules about everything from product placement to behavioral marketing.
"Nobody knows what's going to happen," concedes Dan Jaffe, executive vice president of government relations at the Association of National Advertisers (ANA). "But there is the largest potential agenda we have faced in many years, and a substantial turnover at the congressional level." MediaPost.com
Time is winding down for those who actually have opinions of their own...
"Boycott ABC Advertisers: Propaganda Arm of the Obama White House
Well, ABC is one of the propaganda arms, anyway. When it comes to Health Care, ABC's Charlie (look down-my-nose-at-Sarah-Palin) Gibbs and Diane Sawyer will be asking "tough questions" of President Obama, in the White House about the President's health care plan. Every once in a while I pine for the Fairness Doctrine. Maybe then, the MSM would find some balance. Never mind. It would be worse. At least there's alternative media." RightWingNews
So, you see, there has been a crystal ball from before President Obama took office. If you want to state your opinion of him, if it is one that he has not scripted, you may want to get it out now. ... With my lack of advertising revenue, I don't have to worry about losing advertisers. So, here is my opinion...Obama is the biggest Democrat! Okay, you already knew that I'm not a fan.

Surprise? Not Really..."Retail sales dip unexpectedly, jobless claims rise"

WASHINGTON – Retail sales disappointed in July and the number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly last week. The latest government reports reinforced concerns about how quickly consumers will be able to contribute to a broad economic recovery.
"There is really no positive spin to put on these numbers," Jennifer Lee, an economist with BMO Capital Markets, wrote in a research note. "The U.S. consumer remains very weak. The jobs situation, while slowly improving, is still dismal."
The Commerce Department said Thursday that retail sales fell 0.1 percent last month. Economists had expected a gain of 0.7 percent.
While autos, helped by the start of the Cash for Clunkers program, showed a 2.4 percent jump — the biggest in six months — there was widespread weakness elsewhere. Gasoline stations, department stores, electronics outlets and furniture stores all reported declines.
Some of Europe's largest economies also benefited from government programs to support the auto industry.

Health officials admit fast tracked shots could cause deaths
Government health officials in the Czech Republic have refused to buy H1N1 flu vaccines from US pharmaceutical firm Baxter International, citing safety concerns.
According to a report by the Czech News Agency CTK, one of the largest English language news outlets in the country, the Czech Health Ministry has halted talks with Baxter citing “the firm’s inability to guarantee that the vaccine is safe and who will bear the risks for possible side-effects.”
The country plans to buy vaccines to cover 25 percent of its population of ten million, but has said it will not buy swine flu vaccine from Baxter before it has acquired a European registration.
“It is a pity, but, unfortunately, at the moment when we accepted the bids, Baxter was unable to confirm that it will deliver a registered vaccine,” Health Minister Dana Juraskova said.
Instead, the country will likely buy its supplies from Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline, but only after the vaccines have undergone regular clinical tests and gained European Medicines Agency registration.
In another CTK report, Deputy Health minister Marek Snajdr was quoted as saying the vaccine “may have side effects and it may even cause death if used”.
Confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in the country remain below 150, according to all estimates, and no one has died from the virus."

Such amounts shall remain available until expended.
(B) FUNDING- There are hereby appropriated to the Trust Fund, out of any moneys in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, an amount requested by the Secretary as necessary to carry out this section, except that the total of all such amounts requested shall not exceed $10,000,000,000.
(C) APPROPRIATIONS FROM THE TRUST FUND-
...(iii) LIMITATION TO AVAILABLE FUNDS- The Secretary has the authority to stop taking applications for participation in the program or take such other steps in reducing expenditures under the reinsurance program in order to ensure that expenditures under the reinsurance program do not exceed the funds available under this subsection." When It Rains, It Pours.
"SALINA, Kan. | Central Kansas has been slammed by powerful storms that uprooted trees, damaged buildings and left hundreds of customers without power.
In Salina, a steeple was blown off the roof of a church at midmorning Monday. Winds estimated at 70 mph broke windows at a home in the Morris County town of Council Grove.
Dean Speaks, interim director of Saline County emergency management, said no injuries were reported, but teams were being sent out at midday to assess the damage.
The violent weather moved into the Salina area about 10:45 a.m. with hail and heavy rain. Speaks said the storm lasted about an hour.

While the fall rate – the number of meteors seen per hour – of the Perseids has declined in recent years since Swift-Tuttle's 1992 return, the time to begin your Perseid watch is now. The random rate has already increased sharply and there is no guaranteed that skies will be clear on the predicted peak time – traditionally August 12 at approximately 11:00 GMT. Obama, Russians, Reichsadler
If you haven't heard already, Russia is showing it's capable of force (or at least a show) just off the East coast of the United States.
"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two Russian attack submarines have been cruising in the Atlantic off the East Coast of the United States, a senior defense official said Wednesday.
Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said their presence is not causing alarms to go off.
"So long as they are operating in international waters, as, frankly, we do around the world, and are behaving in a responsible way, they are certainly free to do so, and it doesn't cause any alarm within this building," he said.
It has been years since Russia operated near the U.S. seaboard, thousands of miles from home ports.
"What's interesting is, they haven't been able to do this in some time, and now they are. It indicates a return to their ability to do this," the senior defense official said.
He viewed the patrol as an example of Russia showing the United States and the world its expeditionary forces, part of a continuing trend. He said the Russians have recently been a partner in anti-piracy operations around the world. And last year the Russian Navy conducted a "tour around the world," pulling into ports throughout Latin America."

Sarah Palin vs Obama.
Sarah Palin is not taking the celebrity role in politics, unlike Obama. Big surprise that someone actually cares about making sure that things are done right and not that they have friendships with celebrities, as well as power to "change".
"Sarah Palin is expected to make a visit next week to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in California, in what would be her first public appearance outside Alaska since resigning as governor, and the sponsors said on Wednesday the event will be closed to the media." -- Reuters.com
How would things be if Palin was President? We wouldn't be on a continual campaign with townhalls for everything. We wouldn't be dealing with a "Health Care Reform" bill that will get shoved through on 51 votes as a "budget" item and cost in more ways than just the growing deficit.

Yes, if Sarah Palin was president, there wouldn't be "the blame game" after 6+ months in office. While I am sure that she is only human and far from perfect, we probably would see some humility coming from her, instead of the constant arrogance we see in the Obama aura. Can you trust a president who has every media event choreographed?

The White House portrayed the town-hall meeting as one in a series of public outreach events, a way for the president to keep his finger on the pulse of public opinion, and in turn to sway Americans on the complex and contentious issue.
This morning, the Washington Post is reporting that "of the seven questions the president answered, four were selected by his staff from videos submitted to the White House Web site or from those responding to a request for 'tweets.' " And the three audience members he called on randomly? The Post says "all turned out to be members of groups with close ties to his administration: the Service Employees International Union, Health Care for America Now, and Organizing for America, which is a part of the Democratic National Committee."
None of this would surprise any good White House advance staffer. Better to control the crowd, screen the questions, anticipate the topics. And, to be fair, a college campus in a Democratic county might be expected to produce friendly questioners.
The problem is that Obama himself made an issue of transparency, promising an administration that allowed the public to see what its government was doing. In fact on Jan. 22, his first full day in office, Obama issued a series of executive orders instructing government agencies to open their files, saying, "Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency." -- L.A. Times
Yes, while the vote has been cast for the current U.S. president (sounds like terminology for the "Golden Globes"), the opinions of U.S. citizens are beginning to turn. While I wish the tide was changing much more quickly, these programs that are being shoved through at the speed-of-light are sure to change the tide by the next presidential election...I hope.
I pray that our U.S. Constitution holds out for this stretch of "change". I just pray that my children won't be paying for the "change" the rest of their lives (which will be cut short because of the new health care reform).

Now on the White House website posted by Macon Phillips comes an eerily similar request for citizens to inform on their neighbors. It states,
"There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to the end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can't keep track of all of them here at the White House, we're asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov."
Read this again carefully. The government of the United States is openly asking citizens to report rumors, the contents of casual conversation, and the contents of emails. They decry the fact that they are unable to "keep track" of the communication between citizens effectively and are asking for help from informers. Of course forwarded emails would contain the electronic addresses of the sender." -- American Thinker
Time to create our own "change".

Cash for Clunkers.
'Clunkers' Critics Question Move to Extend Funding for Program
Senate Republicans are raising concerns that extending the "cash for clunkers" program would use deficit spending to pay for a program that, according to its supporters, has already met its objectives.
The cash for clunkers exchange program has turned lawmakers into victims of their own success. Now some senators are questioning why taxpayers should continue to foot the bill for something that, according to supporters, has already achieved its goals.
The program, approved in June, pays people to trade in their gas-guzzling "clunkers" for new, fuel-efficient cars. It has helped boost auto dealers' sales numbers, and it's gotten a heap of inefficient vehicles off the road.
But the program, which was set to expire on Nov. 1, has already spent pretty much all of the $1 billion the government set aside for it, leading Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to say that the "wildly popular" program should be extended with additional funds.
The House voted to give the program a $2 billion lifeline on Friday, and LaHood now is putting pressure on the Senate to approve the extension before it adjourns for August recess at the end of the week. He said Monday he expects it will pass.
A senior Democratic adviser told FOX News that Senate leaders hope to act on the extension later this week.
But there was never a mandate in the original legislation that said the program had to last until November.
"Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first," reads the government Web site for the "clunkers" program.
The exhaustion of funds simply came before the expiration date. Republicans are suggesting it's too late to change the allocation now.
I just think this is a great example of the stupidity that's coming out of Washington right now," Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., said on "FOX News Sunday," adding that the Senate needs to "slow this thing down."
"We estimated this would cost $1 billion," DeMint said. "Now they're saying we need $2 billion more. Our children and grandchildren can't afford to make these car dealers well right now."
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has threatened to block the bill.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, in prepared remarks, said Monday that the lifeline request just shows how poor the original spending estimates were.
Though supporters are talking about pulling the additional $2 billion from existing stimulus funds, that hasn't quelled Republican concerns.
McConnell spokesman Don Stewart said that cash is still "borrowed money."
"They can say it's paid for, but it's paid for with a credit card. ... It's like making your minimum payment through a cash advance of another credit card," he said.
However, because the "clunkers" program was originally authorized at $4 billion -- not $1 billion -- some supporters had wanted to review its funding this fall anyway to see if more money could be allocated.

Sarah Palin Getting Divorced?
Heard about the Palin divorce? Here's what I've been able to turn up.

"According to my source Sarah is finished with Todd and has decided to end their marriage.
She has purchased land in Montana (I wonder whose donations paid for that?), and may be considering moving herself and the children as far away from Alaska as she can get.
Do you remember all of that talk about her missing wedding ring during the three part going away picnics? Well it turns out that ring now sleeps with the fishes. Apparently in a fit of anger Sarah stripped the ring from her finger and tossed it into a lake. (No I did not think to ask WHICH lake so I cannot confirm if it is Lake Lucille, on which her house is located, or some other lake. I apologize for not getting clarification, but I was a little tired last night and so was my source.)
So it appears that the reason Palin has been so quiet, and has given her tweeting fingers a rest, is NOT because of any master plan, or carefully orchestrated new direction, but simply the result of the emotional stress that prevents her from communicating with her fan base or making any public appearances."

Reports are claiming the Palin resignation speech last Sunday featured Todd bothered and then not with his wife after the event. Chatter also claims Sarah Palin wasn’t wearing her wedding ring following the speech."
