Yellowstone Super Volcano. Swarms of Earthquakes. Possibilities of Eruption.

What will likely happen if the earthquake or, in other words, seismic activity continues to occur and increase in magnitude near and around Yellowstone?  This will theoretically cause an eruption of the giant Yellowstone Caldera.

"Yellowstone, like Hawaii, is believed to lie on top of an area called a hotspot where light, hot, molten mantle rock rises towards the surface. While theYellowstone hotspot is now under the Yellowstone Plateau, it previously helped create the eastern Snake River Plain (to the west of Yellowstone) through a series of huge volcanic eruptions. Although the hotspot's apparent motion is to the east-northeast, the North American Plate is really moving west-southwest over the stationary hotspot in the Earth's mantle.[4]
Over the past 17 million years or so, this hotspot has generated a succession of violent eruptions and less violent floods of basaltic lava. Together these eruptions have helped create the eastern part of the Snake River Plain from a once-mountainous region. At least a dozen of these eruptions were so massive that they are classified as supereruptions. Volcanic eruptions sometimes empty their stores of magma so swiftly that they cause the overlying land to collapse into the emptied magma chamber, forming a geographic depression called a caldera. Calderas formed from explosive supereruptions can be as wide and deep as mid- to large-sized lakes and can be responsible for destroying broad swaths of mountain ranges." 
Does this picture look like a deadly volcano to you?  Well, pay attention to this post and ask yourself if you need to put together a family preparedness plan in the case of an imminent eruption.

In December 2008, continuing into January 2009, more than 500 quakes were detected under the northwest end of Yellowstone Lake over a seven day span, with the largest registering a magnitude of 3.9.[16][17] The most recent swarm started in January 2010 after the Haiti earthquake and before the Chile earthquake. With 1620 small earthquakesbetween January 17, 2010 and February 1, 2010, this swarm was the second largest ever recorded in the Yellowstone Caldera. The largest of these shocks was a magnitude 3.8 on January 21, 2010 at 11:16 PM MST.[15][18] This swarm reached the background levels by 21 February."

Yellowstone National Park's supervolcano just took a deep "breath," causing miles of ground to rise dramatically, scientists report.
Steam rising from Castle Geyser in Yellowstone National Park.The simmering volcano has produced major eruptions—each a thousand times more powerful than Mount St. Helens's 1980 eruption—three times in the past 2.1 million years. Yellowstone's caldera, which covers a 25- by 37-mile (40- by 60-kilometer) swath of Wyoming, is an ancient crater formed after the last big blast, some 640,000 years ago.

Since then, about 30 smaller eruptions—including one as recent as 70,000 years ago—have filled the caldera with lava and ash, producing the relatively flat landscape we see today.
But beginning in 2004, scientists saw the ground above the caldera rise upward at rates as high as 2.8 inches (7 centimeters) a year.

The rate slowed between 2007 and 2010 to a centimeter a year or less. Still, since the start of the swelling, ground levels over the volcano have been raised by as much as 10 inches (25 centimeters) in places.
"It's an extraordinary uplift, because it covers such a large area and the rates are so high," said the University of Utah's Bob Smith, a longtime expert in Yellowstone's volcanism.

It wasn’t until the late 1960s that Bob Christiansen, a geologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS) began to realize that the cliffs surrounding the park were really the rim of volcanic caldera. A volcanic caldera forms when the ground collapses because the magma beneath it erupted. Why did it take geologists so long to recognize Yellowstone for what it is? Because usually volcanic calderas are at most 2-4 km in diameter. The cliffs of the Yellowstone caldera stand 65 kilometers apart.

Map of Yellowstone National Park and the CalderaThe Yellowstone Caldera sits next to two more ancient volcanic calderas to the south west. It just so happened that right when Christiansen began to trace out these enormous ancient calderas, other scientists began to use radioactive dating techniques on ash-fall deposits throughout the central United States. Three major ash-falls blanket much of the country from California through Idaho, Iowa, and down to northern Louisiana. These blankets were dated at approximately 2.2 million, 1.3 million, and 640,000 years old; exactly the same age as the three Yellowstone calderas.
By carefully recording the thickness and extent of each ash layer, scientists determined that the three eruptions had released between 300 and 2,500 cubic kilometers of ash. Mt. St Helens released a paltry-by-comparison 1 cubic kilometer. The largest of the three eruptions stands as the fifth largest eruption in all of known geologic history. That is how Yellowstone became known as a supervolcano.
...Given that an average American lives to be about 70 years old, that would put each of our odds of witnessing another giant Yellowstone eruption at about 1 in 13,000. That folks, means you are far more likely witness such an eruption than you are to die in a plane crash.
Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park...Since observations began in about 1925, the caldera floor has been slowly rising each year as magma refills the chamber 5 km below the surface. Our abilities to monitor the supervolcano have improved over the decades, and now we can detect the swarms of earthquakes that signal the movement of huge magma flows far below.
From observations of much smaller volcanic eruptions elsewhere, we know that earthquake swarms grow more frequent and intense as an eruption grows near. So geologists expect that any eruption at Yellowstone, even one much smaller than those that formed the three calderas, would show these signs as well. In 2001, the USGS and the University of Utah formed the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory to monitor seismic activity in the area. Hopefully the Observatory can provide enough warning to save the residents of the central United States. But, a nation-wide evacuation order would most certainly not be universally obeyed.

During that time it would release steam and ash into the atmosphere that would partially block the sun, chilling the entire world. For thousands of miles, a blanket of ash would rain down on the land killing crops, poisoning water, and destroying mechanical and electrical equipment. Unless evacuated beforehand, people across the midwest would probably not get enough warning to leave before they are buried or suffocate on the ash. The casualties would no doubt be in the millions.

"I am advising all State officials around Yellowstone National Park for a potential State of Emergency.  In the last week over 252 earthquakes have been observed by the USGS.  

We have a 3D view on the movement of magma rising underground.  We have all of the pre warning signs of a major eruption from a super volcano.  - I want everyone to leave Yellowstone National Park and for 200 miles around the volcano caldera."

What would happen if the supervolcano scenario occurred
If the volcano at Yellowstone were to erupt like it appears to have done some time in the ancient past, we'd love to paint a survival scenario for you. However, beyond getting ready for the cold that might come due to the ash blotting out the sun and life as we know it (and moving away from the center of the eruption as much as possible) a survival scenario really doesn't exist in the traditional sense.

First, anyone within about 100 kilometers of such an explosion would simply be killed by the explosion itself (remember that the eruption in the ancient past emitted 240 cubic miles of material) or the volcanic ash quite quickly.

Next, such an explosion would leave the majority of the North American continent below ash. The ash would be more significant closer to the explosion, but dangerous amounts would still reach three quarters of the continent.

After all, remember that volcanic ash is really very fine rock and mineral particles. Thus, these are dangerous to breath as they tend to cement together (and that's not good in a human body). Further, they are abrasive to the eyes. Last, when ash falls on a structure it will cement and become quite heavy. In other words, a likely consequence of it are millions of destroyed shelters.

Oh yeah, and on top of it all, ash is dangerous to mechanical devices like cars.

Some things to do in the event of volcanic ash that may help you survive
As was indicated earlier, if you're within 100 kilometers of the supervolcano, you're in big trouble. However, there are some precautions one can take in the event of dealing with volcanic ash, and these really start with having the appropriate supplies on hand.

Beforehand you should have (most information taken from the CVO Website)


Extra dust masks

Non-perishable food for three days (see several articles at the site on this)

Drinking water for three days (see articles)

Plastic wrap (for electronics)

First aid kit and medications

Radio with batteries

Flashlights with batteries

Wood for a fireplace or stove

Blankets and warm clothing

Cleaning supplies

Cash (forget credit cards and ATM's in this situation)

Pet food and supplies

Cell phone


Further, it's not a bad idea to know your child's school emergency plan and to have some of the above in your car (though the reality is that if you don't have to drive, then don't when it comes to ash). Beyond that, you should stay indoors and listen for directions from emergency personnel as long as possible. If you do need to leave the house for any reason, wear a mask to protect your eyes.

And hope that the world doesn't turn into a frozen tundra as many think parts of it will.

In the end, there is no definitive evidence that they Yellowstone supervolcano will erupt anytime soon. However, most scientists do believe that it eventually will happen.

So why not be as ready as possible?

China is a nation of superlatives, and its role in weather manipulation is no exception. Beijing runs the world's largest program in cloud seeding – the process of imbuing clouds with silver iodide to generate precipitation, usually in times of drought. China rolled out its cloud seeding technology to clear the skies of dust and pollution before the Beijing Olympics; last week, the rocket launchers and aircraft were mobilized again – this time to battle a drought in the nation's wheat belt.

Evidently, the world's biggest cloud seeding program just got bigger. Yesterday, China's meteorological agency announced that it had received over $1 million from the Ministry of Finance to improve its anti-drought work in rainmaking. Though Beijing's enthusiasm for the technology has been known to go astray, last week's efforts are credited with bringing at least some new snow and moisture to parts of the dessicated region.

For many around the world nervously watching China's wheat crop, that's good news. As the world's largest wheat producer, China is self-sufficient in wheat, but if this year's harvests don't deliver, there is a possibility that Beijing could burn through its significant reserves and have to start importing wheat, driving global prices up even further. (Yesterday, pushed up by floods in Australia and an earlier drought in Russia, wheat prices reached their highest mark since the 2008 record prices.)

How seriously the possibility of large-scale imports in China should be taken has been the subject of much debate in the last few days. Last week, the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released a report (the first of its kind on China in 15 years) that the drought in the north, which has been going strong since fall, has affected about up to 60% of the nation's wheat crop. The report reads:

According to official estimates some 5.16 million hectares out of the total of about 14 million hectares under winter wheat may have been affected in these provinces. The drought has reportedly affected some 2.57 million people and 2.79 million livestock due to the shortages of drinking water.

It goes on to say that domestic wheat prices are up 16% over last year, and if the dry weather persists through the spring to affect the next harvest late this year, it could seriously impact global wheat prices.

Chinese officials predictably downplayed the report, estimating that the drought-affected area is closer to 40% — not 60 — and rightly underscoring the fact that the FAO report still predicts that China's wheat output would remain steady at 112 million tons. The FT's Javier Blas also called the UN body alarmist for jumping the gun at a sensitive time: “As the FAO tries to pick up the ball – under huge pressure from the French presidency of the G20 to improve its crop forecasting – it risks creating problems. With global agricultural markets on edge, the world is looking at the FAO for guidance. It needs timely and accurate information, but also nuance and perspective.”

Though trying to stamp out any sense of panic, Beijing itself has not exactly been blasé about the current state of affairs. China's winter wheat crop, harvested in June, yields over 90% of the nation's supply. Over the weekend, China's own drought control agency posted that continuing conditions were “grim” and called for emergency irrigation measures in the wheat belt, according to the New York Times. In addition to its hefty new cloud seeding investment, the government also handed out subsidies this fall to help farmers improve irrigation ditches and reservoirs in the wheat belt. A report from state-run daily Xinhua notes today that if all else fails and no rain comes through this winter or spring, "thousands" of wells could supply water.

Which sounds like a lot, but in the land of superlatives, it ain't. Nor will it be very comforting for the wheat farmers — or the global markets — if the weather doesn't break before the next planting this summer. So let's hope for rain.

Difference in Pole Shifts Between North & South Poles

While the speed of the earth’s magnetic north pole shift has drastically sped up lately to about 34 miles per year (55 km), let’s look at what is happening with the south magnetic pole.
Every magnetic field has two polarities, North and South for example, and one might think that whatever is happening with one pole would be happening (in the inverse?) to it’s opposite pole.
Well as it appears, the earth’s magnetic south pole is not behaving similarly to it’s opposite north pole. In fact, it’s drift, or pole shift, is actually slowing down! Presently it’s only moving 3 miles (5 km) per year, only a tenth the speed of the north!

Not only that, but it is interesting to note that both the north and south magnetic poles are favoring one side of the earth – the south pole is heavily favoring one side, and continues to move further away from true south.
The south magnetic pole is actually 1,800 miles (2,900 km) away from the earth’s true south pole! That is a substantial offset.
The north magnetic pole is fairly near true north and is ‘only’ about 360 miles (580 km) away.

When the earth is visualized with its magnetic poles more offset and favored towards one side of the planet than the other (which it has been for some time – although the south magnetic pole is moving even further to the favored side), coupled with the large variance in shift speed between the north and south, explanations may seem bizarre.
Since we know that the earth’s magnetic field is generated from the spinning liquid molten iron Inner Core, is one part of the core churning differently than the other?
Could the Inner Core, or part of it, be offset somehow, causing the magnetic pole axis to pass through one side of the planet more than the other? Wouldn’t that cause the planet to wobble?
Is the iron consistency changing in one part of the Inner Core more than the other?
If the Inner Core is ‘centered’ with the rest of the earth, and the molten iron composition is considered to be relatively consistent, do these observations indicate that the magnetic axis is actually bending or warping as it passes through the planet?


These are all interesting things to think about (for some of us), and while being just a logical minded casual observer, there is no doubt that these earth changes are powerful ones – even if only occurring relative to the time frame of the planets life.
Take a look at the following graph and see the extreme difference in North versus South Pole Shift speed since about 1930. As they say, a picture’s worth a thousand words…

As you can see, I spent a lot of time on graphics today ;)
Observe the magnetic pole axis tilt, and the fairly precise indication to the part of the planet that is favored more-so by proximity to the magnetic axis.
Could crustal movements, earthquakes and volcanoes be affected differently on this side of the planet than the other? The location is certainly right on top of the pacific ring of fire, and very near the general vicinity of Indonesia (most active volcanoes in the world), and located in the part of the world that gets the majority of earthquakes. It could purely coincidental, but who’s to say…

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Congressional Republicans tore into the Obama administration over the economic stimulus plan Wednesday, arguing that the White House is mishandling the distribution of the money while overstating the ability of the package to create jobs.

They criticized the White House for referring to the number of "jobs created or saved" by the $787 billion package -- a metric, they claimed, that is impossible to verify.

The White House Office of Management and Budget defended the plan, arguing that every federal dollar spent has, by definition, helped to ease the pain of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

The Republican and Democratic leaders traded their arguments during a contentious hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

"In selling the stimulus package, the administration promised the American people that [the] legislation would create or save 3.5 million jobs and prevent the U.S. unemployment rate from rising above 8 percent," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California.

"I believe that the discredited Keynesian theory behind the effort is misguided, and I am convinced that it won't work," said Issa, referring to the theories of economist John Maynard Keynes. "Unfortunately, recent economic data has validated my opposition."

The economy has shed 3.4 million jobs over the past six months, according to the Department of Labor. The unemployment rate rose for the ninth straight month in June, climbing to 9.5 percent and hitting a 26-year high.

Top Obama Aides: Second Stimulus "Might Eventually Be Needed"
Media outlets are reporting that as rising unemployment continues to take a toll on the economy, some top aides to President Obama think a second economic stimulus package may become necessary. The Financial Times reports "senior administration officials think further stimulus might eventually be needed but they do not want to have this fight now. Both the economics and the politics call for postponing a decision to late this year or early in 2010." The New York Times reports, "For the moment, Mr. Obama and his top economic advisers are fending off calls for more action."

The CBS Evening News reported "since the President signed" the stimulus "into law in February, the nation has lost another two million jobs, pushing unemployment to its highest rate in 25 years." CNN's Situation Room reported, "If the question is, is the $787 billion recovery plan making a difference, Republicans in a House hearing today gave a resounding 'no.'" Fox News' Special Report noted that Administration aides said $57 billion of the stimulus funds have been committed, creating 150,000 jobs, or "$380,000 a job."

The Financial Times reports that "while arguments over the benefits of the stimulus continue to rage, Democrats have shown themselves to be divided." The Hill reports Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) "urged House members to consider another stimulus package just for infrastructure projects in order to produce more jobs."

The Treasury Department wants to keep the money at its disposal in case the economy gets worse but fiscal conservatives like Sen. Judd Gregg and Rep. Spencer Bachus want the money kept to pay down the national debt.

As debate grows about a possible second stimulus package for the flagging American economy, at least one legendary investor is giving the idea his guarded approval.

"I think that a second one may well be called for," Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, told "Good Morning America" today. But, he added, "you hope it doesn't get watered down in many ways."

Buffett cautioned that a second stimulus package, like the first, won't be "a panacea," because stimulus packages take time to work. He criticized lawmakers' work on the first stimulus package, which contained $787 billion in spending.

"Our first stimulus bill ... was sort of like taking half a tablet of Viagra and having also a bunch of candy mixed in ... as if everybody was putting in enough for their own constituents," he said. "It doesn't have really quite the wall that might have been anticipated there."
