Tornado Outbreak
Winter Rays
An unusual optical phenomenon in extreme cold climate regions. Today was the first day of -20 degree weather in Fairbanks, Alaska. There were sun dogs and other fun, colorful geometric shapes in the sky. This was taken after dark, a 7-shot HDR exposure using Artizen software. The light is coming from standard street lights at a nearby elementary school. The ice in the air creates a diffraction effect that makes it appear the lights are shining straight up. The oppsite of a daylight phenomenon that makes a pillar of bright, shimmering light straight down. Note that the light source doesn't have to be visible to still create the effect. This can easily be mistaken for the northern lights by an inexperienced viewer.
Wonderland
Yesterday, cruising along the Alaska Highway between the border and Northway, Alaska, actually for over 100 miles in all, we could stop anywhere and watch the distant mountains morphing into a variety of weird shapes, at times even disconnecting from earth and partially floating in the cold air. It's a fascinating sight and unique chance to easily photograph something which has no conventional physical reality but is nonetheless very real. The Fata Morgana, or Mirage is a lensing effect caused by overlapping air masses of different temperatures.
You can just sit and watch the mountains change through a variety of astonishingly strange shapes.
Alaska's eastern Tanana Valley showcases this weird effect in a uniquely frequent and vivid manner, during the coldest months of winter.

Ray Of Light on Revelstoke Mountain
This photo was taken from the Revelstoke Mountain ski hill (actually Mount MacKenzie) on December 30th, 2010, at 3:26 PM, facing west as the sun set behind the mountains. The ray of light is real and not an artifact of the photo. You could see the ice crystals floating through the ray. It was so amazing that everybody stopped skiing and stared in wonder!

Mammatus Clouds
Happy New Year! I just wanted to share the attached picture of a strange bit of cloud formation I saw on New Year's Eve, at about 5:30 pm. I was in El Granada, heading west towards Highway 1 when I spotted what looked like a hole ripped in the cloud cover, along with a "funnel" of broken clouds pointing down. I'm not sure if this was created by wind somehow, or by a small plane heading for the nearby Half Moon Bay airport, but it was certainly intriguing to look at -- unfortunately, the only camera handy was my cellphone, so the image isn't very sharp. Anyone else see this? Or want to guess what may have caused it? |
Add a comment | Start a topicThis is about the strangest phenomenon that I have ever seen in all my days. No, no Photoshop here. I imagine this is what the moon looks like. Everything looked red and nearly everyone was outside looking at the ominous and eerie sky. Truly weird. The strangest thing is that all of these pictures were taken in the last five days! http://www.amymuse.com/2010/03/strange-weather-in-iraq-this-week.html

A contact in Australia just alerted me to
what he describes as "very strange
weather taking place over the south
west of Australia". He told me to go to
the national weather satellite images if
I could not open the images he
attached (See left). By the time I had
discovered the e-mail and checked,
the large clearly defined ring had
mostly dissipated but still was just
visible on a time loop which was
spiraling counter clockwise (Low
Pressure system). http://www.colinandrews.net/Cloud-Radar-Circle-Australia-2010-0116.html

Notice The Blotches instead of jet stream storms, there are specific areas that are showing storms in more circular form. These have been larger in past images. This one is from today, from http://www.weather.gov/radar_tab.php
HAARP information galore!!!!!
