SEATTLE – Hundreds of people have gathered in Westlake Center in support of protesters in Egypt who are demanding economic and political change.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has faced days of anti-government protests, with tens of thousands of people filling the streets of Cairo and other major cities demanding his resignation after nearly 30 years in power. The protesters have said they are fed up with the massive unemployment, lack of opportunities and corruption that plague the country.
The Seattle group is asking the United States government to not support oppressive regimes in Egypt and throughout the Middle East. They say Egyptians want:
- President Mubarak to leave Egypt so fair elections can be held
- Freedom - of speech, press, personal communication, religion…
- Equal rights for all
- Lifting of the state of emergency
- Tangible economic improvement
