Manchester joins the ever growing list of cities where bizarre occarances of dead animals are appearing

 

Hundreds of fish have been found dead in a Manchester pond in the latest bizarre mass animal deaths.

Experts say the freezing weather caused the deaths.

Nature lover Stuart Hall, 60, spotted the fish in the pond on Chudleigh Close, Stockport, during a walk near his home.

The 500 fish - many thought to be large bream and pike - were set in the ice on the pond. Mr Hall, of Mostyn Road, Hazel Grove, said he was worried the water may be poisoned.

He said: "I was shocked, it was awful to see all that life just gone. It's like the 'birds dropping from the trees' scenario, but on a much larger scale.

"When you love nature and the countryside it's heartbreaking. There is no sign of life here whatsoever - not one duck."

It’s the latest in a series of strange animal deaths around the world which has claimed the lives of birds including doves, coots and starlings and several species of fish.

Tony Bielderman from Stockport and District Anglers' Federation, which manages the pond, said: "We do not believe there is any pollution as such, but that this is a natural occurrence which has happened during the extremely cold weather we have suffered for a month or so.

"The numbers involved are 400-500 fish - I wouldn't think it's the full stock by any means."

The Environment Agency said people should contact them if they suspected fish were in trouble elsewhere.

A spokesman said: "This has happened in a few places across the north west. Ice forms on the top of the water and cuts down the oxygen, causing the fish to struggle.

"Lots of fishing clubs have aeration equipment which pumps oxygen into the water and sometimes we may advise that the ice is broken in some places, so that oxygen can start to be recreated under the ice."

10,000 Cattle Dead In Vietnam: Cows, Buffalo Part Of Mass Die-Off

In the latest of a string of mass animal deaths, 10,000 cows and buffalo have died in Vietnam.

Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed the news this week that more than 10,000 cows and buffalos died nationwide due to harsh weather conditions.

Cattle have been dying throughout Vietnam, which has had a particularly intense winter. The northern mountainous province of Cao Bang was hardest hit with 2,260 dead cattle, per Thanh Nien News. Some have said the number of total dead cattlemay be as high as 13,000.

Mass animal deaths have been in the news quite a bit lately. Hundreds of birds were found dead in South Dakota early this week, and before that birds were found dead in Italy and birds fell from the sky in Arkansas, among other incidents.

Some of the mass die-offs have been explained - for instance, indigestion is thought to be the cause in Italy and the U.S. government has admitted involvement in the South Dakota case. But othersremain up for debate.

The dead birds and dead fish events take a new twist today. The dead birds found on Highway 101 this weekend had a witness to the event. The witness watched as the birds flew into a tractor trailer truck. The witness said it was as if the “birds were committing suicide.” Today more dead birds are found along the highway in Alabama, with authorities believing that they too ran into a tractor trailer truck, according to the Huffington Post. Why are the birds flying into objects and killing themselves.

The dead bird and dead fish events world wide has sparked the interest of many, who cannot help wonder what the cause of all this carnage is?

In Bebe Arkansas, the officials said it looked like the birds just ran into everything from buildings to trees, killing themselves from the impact. They believed the birds were scared first, causing them to do this. "The birds were frightened by fireworks theory" does not hold water. Something is causing all these birds to run head on into objects rendering them dead!

Witnesses who reported the seeing the birds in Kentucky and Arkansas hit the ground, said that they heard a  swishing as it appeared the birds nose dived into the ground. The site was eerie, reported the bystanders according to an article on Topix.

Are the mass dead birds events the results of the birds killing themselves by flying head on into objects and the ground? What is happening to the birds world wide that would make them do this?

The State of Connecticut has a dead bird hot line, so to speak. It is a phone number set up to report findings of dead birds throughout the state. This phone line was set up to help the State of Connecticut authorities to track the bird flu, and his nothing to do with the dead bird events seen world wide in the last few weeks. If Connecticut were to have a dead bird event, it would most likely not go unnoticed after all the publicity of the last few days.

DONG THAP - More than 150 tonnes of red tilapias have died en masse in the past week in Cao Lanh District in the southern province of Dong Thap, resulting in losses of VND35 billion (S$2.2 million) for aquaculture farmers. Red tilapias are the world's most popular farmed fish. They are fast growing and low in mercury. The dead fish were being raised by 41 households along the Can Lo River. It was the first time such a disaster has occurred. "Tests on the fish and water samples reveal the deaths were caused by frequent ebb tides and the high densities of fish kept caged in pens," said Vu Thi Nhung, head of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment's Environmental Protection Division. The tests were conducted by the department and Can Tho University. Nhung added that ebb tides created high amounts of organic substances in the water, which helped make oxygen levels below regulated levels. The density of the fish in pens was 130-200 per square metre, much higher than the 90-150. "The more organic substances deposited, the less oxygen in the water. This is what killed them," said Nhung. She added that the department did not have any plan to support local farmers who lost their fish. But it will hold training courses to make sure farmers understand the proper technology for raising the fish. Share144
