Hundreds of people attended a peaceful rally at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square on Saturday afternoon to support protesters who are clashing with police on the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian cities.

People crowded the square in a sign of solidarity for the demonstrators in Egypt and a show of concern about the growing strife that has killed more than 70 people and injured hundreds more.

Draped in flags and waving placards in the air, the crowd in downtown Toronto showed its disdain for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, chanting "Mubarak must go" before rally officially began at 1 p.m.

Their calls echoed the anti-Mubarak sentiment of thousands of pro-democracy protesters who continued to demonstrate in several Egyptian cities Saturday.

In Toronto, people who attended the solidarity rally called for Mubarak's removal and for political reform in the North African nation.

"(Egyptians) deserve freedom. They do not need anymore regimes," rally organizer Ahmed Khalifa told CTV News.

Khalifa has relatives and friends living in the middle of the unrest.

"My family is on the streets, their neighbours are on the streets protecting their own buildings from looting," Khalifa said.

Local Egyptian-Canadians were joined at the rally by Canadians of other nationalities and immigrants from Arab countries such as Tunisia, another North African nation where civil unrest led to the end of its dictator's decades-long rule earlier this month.

Khalifa likened the revolt in Egypt to the civil unrest in East Germany that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the end of communism and the reunification of Germany.

As a precaution, Toronto police officers monitored the pro-democracy rally to make sure it remained orderly.

The Toronto gathering, organized on social-networking websites such as Facebook, followed peaceful demonstrations in Ottawa and Montreal on Friday.

Demonstrations, looting continue in Egypt

Meanwhile, protests in Egypt took another deadly turn Saturday when Egyptian police opened fire on a massive crowd, killing at least three demonstrators in downtown Cairo. Despite a government-imposed curfew, public demonstrations and widespread looting of shops and homes continued.

Residents and shopkeepers in affluent neighbourhoods were boarding up their houses and stores against the looters roaming the streets with knives and sticks. Gunfire was heard in some neighbourhoods.

For five days, thousands of protestors have been demanding the end of Mubarek's 30-year reign over the North African nation.

Protesters' demands include term limits for the presidency, the dismissal of Interior Minister Habib El-Adly, an end to police brutality and the abolition of the state of emergency designation in place since 1981.

On Saturday, Mubarak named his intelligence chief as his first-ever vice-president, setting the stage for a successor as demands for the longtime leader's ouster showed no sign of abating.

Protestors are also upset with massive unemployment, rising food prices and unflinching poverty that has gripped Egypt for years.

The Power of Prayer

An email that was sent to me from a friend...

SPECIAL GROCERY LIST

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face,
walked into a grocery store.



She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if
he would let her charge a few groceries.

She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they
had seven children and they needed food.

John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his
store at once.

Visualizing the family needs, she said: 'Please, sir! I will bring you the
money just as soon as I can.'

John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge
account at his store..

Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation
between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he
would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in
a very reluctant voice, 'Do you have a grocery list?'

Louise replied, 'Yes sir.' 'O.K' he said, 'put your grocery list on the
scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in
groceries.'



Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse
and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid
the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.

The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales
went down and stayed down.

The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said
begrudgingly, 'I can't believe it.'

The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the
other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued=2 0to
put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more.

The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of
paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement.

It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said:

'Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.'

The grocer gave her the groceries that he had
gathered and stood in stunned silence.

Louise thanked him and left the store. The other customer handed a
fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said; 'It was worth every penny of it.
Only God Knows how much a prayer weighs.'

By now you've probably heard that Sarah Palin has called the Obama Administration's Healthcare Reform Bill "Evil". Well, here is a portion of her statement from Facebook...

"An interpretation of the phrase "survival of the fittest" to mean "only the fittest organisms will prevail" (a view sometimes derided as "Social Darwinism") is not consistent with the actual theory of evolution. Not surprising, there is a great deal of backlash that seems to be coming out of left field regarding this Obama Administration Healthcare Reform Bill. Maybe the reality check has already begun for those who mistakenly voted for Obama in the first place. Perhaps the reality check needs to happen for those who seem to think that the anger is somehow contrived and staged regarding this massive Trillion Dollar plan.

A poll taken previously in Utah regarding the Healthcare Exchange isn't surprising either.

The way the vote is going to go through for the healthcare reform bill...in the form of a budgetary measure so that Biden can be the 51st vote -- "Hitler insisted that his party was determined to come to power legally, that the phrase "National Revolution" was only to be interpreted "politically", and that his Party was a friend, not an enemy...Hitler appealed to the bulk of German farmers, war veterans and the middle class, who had been hard-hit by both the inflation of the 1920s and the unemployment of the Depression..." Although the consensus seemed to be negatory on the Utah Health Insurance Exchange, it didn't seem to stop it from going forward. Big surprise?

The Heritage Foundation published an article regarding their concerns about this Healthcare Reform Bill and the Exchange.

"Members of Congress, pursuing President Barack Obama's health policy agenda, want to create a national health insurance exchange as a platform for a public health care plan to compete against private health insurance.

...While a national health insurance exchange is sometimes described as a nationwide pool of health insurance providers that would facilitate access to coverage for individuals and employers, its major function would be to provide a platform for a government-run public health plan that, using Medicare-style administrative pricing, would "compete" against private health insurance. Congressional champions of the idea say that this would increase the range of choice and competition available to Americans. In fact, it would do exactly the opposite."

(3) EFFECTIVENESS- The ceasing or termination of a State-based Health Insurance Exchange under this subsection shall be effective in such time and manner as the Commissioner shall specify." [bold added]

If you are wondering what all of the hubbub is about regarding the care of the elderly, disabled, chronically ill and so forth, here is a little snippet of the bill for you to noodle on.

...(iii) LIMITATION TO AVAILABLE FUNDS- The Secretary has the authority to stop taking applications for participation in the program or take such other steps in reducing expenditures under the reinsurance program in order to ensure that expenditures under the reinsurance program do not exceed the funds available under this subsection." Obamacare. Obama in Denial.

Obama, Russians, Reichsadler

If you haven't heard already, Russia is showing it's capable of force (or at least a show) just off the East coast of the United States.

"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two Russian attack submarines have been cruising in the Atlantic off the East Coast of the United States, a senior defense official said Wednesday.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said their presence is not causing alarms to go off.

"So long as they are operating in international waters, as, frankly, we do around the world, and are behaving in a responsible way, they are certainly free to do so, and it doesn't cause any alarm within this building," he said.

It has been years since Russia operated near the U.S. seaboard, thousands of miles from home ports.

"What's interesting is, they haven't been able to do this in some time, and now they are. It indicates a return to their ability to do this," the senior defense official said.

He viewed the patrol as an example of Russia showing the United States and the world its expeditionary forces, part of a continuing trend. He said the Russians have recently been a partner in anti-piracy operations around the world. And last year the Russian Navy conducted a "tour around the world," pulling into ports throughout Latin America."

Interesting, eh? Actually, not shocking either. That is the sad part.

Health Care Czar?

Being unsure that Obama won't find some back channel to push his health care legislation/program through, it doesn't surprise me that there is a bit of delay.

"A key House committee on Tuesday indefinitely postponed voting on health care reform legislation after Democratic leaders were unable to line up enough votes from moderate members of their own party.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee canceled the session as it faced serious concerns about the legislation from fiscally conservative Blue Dog Democrats, who hold a large number of seats on the panel. The Energy and Commerce Committee is the only House panel with jurisdiction over health care that has not completed writing its version of the reform bill.

President Obama plans to meet with those Democrats Tuesday. He stressed before going into the meeting that lawmakers have already forged unprecedented consensus on health care and expressed confidence that they could finish what they started." Source Here

I'm sure that the orating Obama will find the right words, be they true or false, to persuade enough members of the Washington machine to vote in favor of his legislation. If not, I'm sure he will put a czar in charge of the new health care program.

Budget Office Warns About Healthcare Reform Package Costs

When it all hits the fan, I don't want to have to say 'I told you so', but it's looking that way...very clearly! Take a look at this smug video of Obama explaining the health care reform and the cost involved. If we thought the first civil war was bad, just wait until desperation sets in and the people decide to gather their pitchforks and torches the second time 'round.
