U.S. & 27 Other Countries Launch Military Exercise In Strait of Hormuz. Iran To Be Nuclear In Less Than 6 Months.

Iran nuclear threat: Netanyahu goes to the people - the American people, that is

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argues his case for establishing 'red lines' on Iran's nuclear program on NBC and CNN today.

By Christa Case Bryant, Staff writer / September 16, 2012
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a joint press conference with his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borissov, not seen, in Jerusalem, Tuesday, Sept. 11. On Sunday interviews with Netanyahu will air on NBC and CNN. He will argue the US should establish clear restrictions on Iran's nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is taking his case for stronger action against Iran straight to the American people, after facing stiff opposition from the Obama administration.
“Iran is guided by a leadership with an unbelievable fanaticism,” he told NBC’s Meet the Press. “It’s the same fanaticism that you see storming your embassies today. You want these fanatics to have nuclear weapons?”
Mr. Netanyahu’s interviews with NBC and CNN, airing this morning, coincide with a report that Israeli officials have been trying in vain for months to convince their US counterparts of an increasing radicalization across the Middle East.
Those trends, Israel reportedly warned, concern not only Israel but also US interests in the region, according to an article in Israel’s left-leaning Haaretz newspaper.
"The Americans were constantly trying to supply explanations and excuses for events in the post-revolution Arab states, and simply ignored the problems," a senior Foreign Ministry official is quoted as saying. "Only now, after what happened to their embassies, the Americans are beginning to understand the situation.”
Netanyahu reaffirmed the strength of the US-Israel alliance in a far-ranging interview with the Jerusalem Post published today. But he said that Israel’s location in a rough neighborhood makes it more sensitive to regional security threats than the US. Speaking specifically about the threat from Iran, he said Israel has a “duty, responsibility, and a right to sound the alarm.”
Over the weekend, Iran and its allies made a series of threatening statements toward both the US and Israel.
On Friday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated his conviction that the "Zionists" would disappear, while a military adviser to Iran’s supreme leader threatened retaliation in the event of an Israeli strike, according to Reuters.

Iran Watching as U.S. Military Launches Exercise in Strait of Hormuz

KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait | The United States, along with more than 27 other countries from four different continents, began Sunday the largest ever military exercise aimed at practicing how to find and destroy sea mines in the waters of the Middle East.
“This is about exercising capabilities that we want to exercise with our partners in the region,” said Pentagon spokesman George Littler this week.” Earlier this summer Little stressed that this training was not aimed at delivering a message to Iran.
However, with tensions heating up with Iran, and Israel threatening to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities, a number of observers say the maneuvers at sea are aimed at Iran, and could be a dress rehearsal for war with the Islamic Republic.
U.S. Defense Department officials reject that characterization.
“I think it’s a signal to Iran,” countered Scott Truver, an expert on navy operations and mine warfare. “Despite the fact that the Department of Defense indicated that it’s not directed at Iran … it is sending a good signal to potential adversaries that we can deal with any threat that’s thrown at us, particularly if it’s the mine threat.”
Last week, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the country will closely monitor the exercise. Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters that the military maneuvers are a “very sensitive phenomenon” amid rising tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program.
The military command staging the exercise says the military scenario will “focus on a hypothetical threat from an extremist organization to mine the international strategic waterways of the Middle East, including the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, and the Persian Gulf, although exercise activities will not extend into the Strait of Hormuz.”
The Pentagon has beefed up its deployments aimed at countering Iran over the past year. This summer, the Navy doubled from four to eight the number of dedicated mine-hunting ships in the Persian Gulf. It also deployed a newly converted ship, the USS Ponce, to serve as a staging and command post for mine hunting operations. It also has kept two aircraft carrier strike groups in the Persian Gulf, cutting short the home stay of one aircraft carrier in the United States in order to maintain the presence of two such vessels in the Mideast region.
“I think it is fair to say that the current level of U.S. military forces in the Gulf is certainly greater than would be expected simply for operations in Afghanistan,” said Henry Boyd, a research associate for defense and military analysis at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “The recent additions all seem to be aimed at providing deterrent and-or contingency capabilities against Iran, and reassuring the United States’ existing Gulf allies.”
Over the past year, Washington and its global partners have heightened economic sanctions on Iran in order to pressure the country to curb its nuclear development program. In response, Iran has threatened to mine the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is believed to have 2,000 to 6,000 mines of varying sophistication.
Sea mines are floating devices that explode when they come into contact with ships.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important choke points, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil passes through the narrow sea passageway. Last year, roughly 14 crude oil tankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz every day, carrying 17 million barrels of oil.
At its narrowest point, the strait is 21 nautical miles wide. However, the two shipping channels — one for northbound traffic and the other for southbound — each measure just two miles wide and are separated by a two-mile buffer zone.
Still, Iran is unlikely to mine the Strait of Hormuz at the current time, according to a wide array of analysts interviewed for this article.
“They would be hurting themselves the most because they would be cutting off their main source of revenue, which is oil exports, at a time when they are already being sanctioned heavily and money is tight,” said Karim Sadjadpour, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
In addition, China — Iran’s main customer for oil — would not like to see the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf curtailed, Sadjadpour said. “China is Iran’s key commercial and strategic patron and they would really alienate the Chinese” if Iranians were to mine the strait, he said.
And Tehran relies on the Strait of Hormuz for another reason: imports.
Almost all of its imported goods enter through the strait, according to Alireza Nader, a senior policy analyst at the RAND Corporation. “Unlike a lot of Arab countries — [including] Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, [which] are building pipelines that bypass the strait — they [Iran] don’t have that significant infrastructure,” Nader said. “So closing the strait would be suicidal.”
However, there is one condition under which Iran might be more likely to mine the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran watchers: if Israel were to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities.
“In the event of a [Israeli] military attack, there is more than [a] 50 percent chance they would attempt to close the strait or prevent others from passing through freely,” said Sadjadpour. “They don’t have that many options for retaliation. They can try to launch missiles into Saudi Arabia to spike oil prices; they can try to unleash Hezbollah and Hamas; and, if they want to hurt the world, it’s by closing the strait.”
Another scenario under which Iran might mine the Strait of Hormuz is if its ability to export oil is completely cut off, according to Nader. If Iran “can’t sell most or any of its oil,” it might “retaliate by blocking the Strait of Hormuz or impede shipping,” he said.
The PBS NewsHour’s deputy foreign affairs and defense editor Daniel Sagalyn is in the Persian Gulf and will be covering the International Mine Countermeasures Exercise, which runs Sept. 16-27.

U.S. Leads Biggest Gulf Mine Exercise in Signal to Iran
By Tony Capaccio on September 16, 2012

The U.S. and 29 other nations have begun the biggest mine-clearing exercise in the Persian Gulf region, a show of force as tensions escalate over a threatened Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The 12-day exercise that started yesterday involves Western nations such as the U.K. and France, as well as participants as varied as Japan, Yemen, Jordan, New Zealand and Estonia, according to the U.S. Navy. In an effort to avoid a showdown with the Islamic Republic, it won’t extend into the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway between Iran and Oman through which as much as a fifth of the world’s traded oil is shipped daily.
In addition to serving as a warning to Iran, the display of power will “signal to Israel that the United States has a military option available” and show “U.S. resolve to its Persian Gulf allies, especially in the face of repeated Iranian threats to try to close the Strait of Hormuz,” according to Kenneth Katzman, a Middle East specialist for the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service in Washington.
Participating nations will conduct mine-hunting and mine- countermeasure operations with MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopters, as well as explosive ordnance disposal, diving, and small-boat exercises and port-clearance operations focused on underwater improvised explosive devices, according to the U.S. Navy 5th Fleet, which is headquartered in Bahrain.
The exercise will focus “on a hypothetical threat to mine the international strategic waterways of the Middle East, including the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, and the Persian Gulf,” the U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida, said in a statement.

Threats on Strait

Iranian officials have periodically threatened to close the Strait, which is 21 miles (34 kilometers) wide at its narrowest point, in retaliation for tightening international sanctions aimed at dissuading them from developing a nuclear weapon. Laying mines or sinking a ship in the Strait would disrupt tanker traffic and also prompt insurance companies to raise rates on tankers, leading at least temporarily to higher oil prices.
Brent oil for October settlement closed at $116.66 a barrel on Sept. 14 in trading on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange. The contract, a benchmark for more than half of the world’s crude, has gained 8.6 percent this year.
On Aug. 30, Iran Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said he wants global oil prices to rise to at least $130 a barrel, which he called a “reasonable price.”
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps is ready to fight a possible military offensive and “nothing will remain” of the Israeli government if it attacks, Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander-in-chief of the corps, said yesterday, according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

‘Red Line’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have said Israel may have no choice but to launch a strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities as international negotiations stall over the program.
Iran’s effort to develop nuclear weapons is now in a “red zone,” and the U.S. must set a clear “red line” that Iran can’t cross without risking a military attack, Netanyahu said yesterday on the NBC News program “Meet The Press.”
Netanyahu has become more vocal in demanding that the U.S. define clear limits since Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a Bloomberg Radio interview on Sept. 9 that the U.S. is “not setting deadlines” on negotiations with Iran.
In addition to the mine-sweeping exercise, the U.S. has two aircraft carrier strike groups in the region currently, with the USS Enterprise in the Arabian Sea and the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Persian Gulf.

‘Devastating Power’

The carriers’ presence tells Iran the U.S. “can easily project devastating power onto Iranian soil at a moment’s notice,” Katzman of the Congressional Research Service said in an e-mail.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told CBS’s “This Morning” on Sept. 11 that “we have the forces in place to be able to not only defend ourselves, but to do what we have to do to try to stop them from developing a nuclear weapon.” Iran says its nuclear program is for civilian purposes.
The mine-clearing exercise’s multinational participation shows “we are not alone -- it’s just not the United States ‘bullying’ Iran,” Michael Eisenstadt, director of military studies at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said in a phone interview.

My PERSONAL Thoughts About September 11, 2001

As I sit here at my computer to type my very personal feelings about 9/11, my emotions well up and explode to the surface, tears streaming down my face, a pile of tissue collecting by my side.

AngelNo, I didn't personally know anyone who died in the attacks of September 11, 2001.  I don't even know anyone who personally...and I mean really personally, knows anyone who died from the attacks that day.  But, I was personally affected clear across the country, in the state of Utah.

"The angels are always near to those who are grieving, to whisper to them that their loved ones are safe in the hand of God."
~Quoted in The Angels' Little Instruction Book by Eileen Elias Freeman, 1994

I remember, with children only ages 1 and 4, being glued to my TV, in shock and unable to turn it off or turn my eyes away.  My heart dropped as the events took place.  As I saw people jumping from the towers in desperation, I could not believe what I was seeing.  I could not imagine the choice they made, being so desperate that they would rather jump to their death than being stuck in the towers as they burnt to the ground.

As the rest of the day continued and more terrorist events took place, I could not imagine that it was real.  We see violence in movies and it seemed that the two were interwoven into one.  "Is this real?  Could this be happening on U.S. soil?", I thought.  "How can I protect my two babies?  What comes next?"

At the time, we were living near the airport in the Salt Lake City area.  Daily, planes were so low as they were landing that we could sometimes see the landing gear.

I remember distinctly on September 11, 2001 that the noise of the airplanes slowed and then stopped to a near stand still.  The silence was deafening.

How strange that day and the following days, weeks, and months became.  I struggled to understand how this could happen and struggled to grasp on to any sort of new reality.

"Unable are the loved to die.
For love is immortality."
~ Emily Dickinson

Extremely empathetic, I struggled with the shock I had from what I had viewed on the television and what I felt for those who lost loved ones and those who were the first responders following the planes going down.  What they saw must likely never leave their minds, their dreams.  That they must have had to make a choice to let some leave this earth while they worked on others who had a better opportunity of survival causes me heart wrenching grief on their behalf.

Because of 9/11, spouses lost soul mates.  Because of 9/11, children, some not yet born, lost parents.  Because of 9/11, parents lost children.  Because of 9/11, the country lost its innocence.

I remember the love that was expressed across the aisle between politicians, which was beautiful to see expressed so openly.  I long for them to remember those days and work together to bring our country back to the prayerfully united power that we once were.  Please remember.  Why don't they remember?!

As for the memorials, there should not be fighting over something that should be a beautiful memorial of days that were so tragic for so many of our nation.  What causes the divide to start again after something so traumatic that rippled throughout our country, causing us to become united, as we should be, so prayerful, as our country started out to be and was meant to be governed.

I prayed for those who lost loved ones, prayed so hard that they would find some sort of comfort.  I prayed that they would be taken care of and that they would find the strength to go on.  What amazing strength they must have found!  I wanted to help, but was in Utah with two babies and didn't have a clue of how I could be of any use.  I just wanted to travel to the homes of all of those affected by September 11, 2001 and hug them and let them know that someone, even across the country, felt love for them, sincere love.  I wouldn't be able to imagine the grief and shock they were going through, but I could offer love and still do offer extreme love and still wish I could go to each of them and give them a hug.  They still need our love and support to go on.

Each September 11th, I cry over the events that took place that day.  I watch the full coverage of the names being read.  I pause for the moments of silence.  Tears roll down my face, tissue after tissue I wipe my face and freely cry and mourn for those who still live but not for those who are now in our Heavenly Father's care.  I am sure those that were lost on 9/11 are watching over their loved ones with care and comfort.

I feel deep pain as I know the nation is not even close to the same as we once were.  Vengeance began.  Harsh words threw a black curtain over the sorrow, grief and love that was bringing our country together.  Love became hate.  Hate became revenge.  Revenge lost the care for those who lost their loved ones and became the country's mantra.

Also being unveiled were stories that our country caused the events as a false flag.  This false flag was said to be the catalyst to take us into the Middle-East to fight and justify that fight.  As I thought about that mentality, I couldn't wrap my mind around the theories that came forward, such as the other towers collapsing in New York that were not that close in proximity to the twin towers, that a missile that hit the Pentagon instead of an airplane, or the fact that there were hardly any remnants of the plane that went down in Pennsylvania so it couldn't be a plane.  Could our country be capable of those attacks?

NYC Skyline

False flags have happened throughout history, but to put our own population, so many of them, in death's path is such evil.  I read the whole report that the 9/11 Commission put together and saw holes in their theories.  I saw that they were not fully disclosing information.

To this day, I still wonder about our country's leaders and whether they caused the 9/11 attacks.  This thought and the months that followed the attacks caused me to have open, watchful eyes to our country and its leadership.  I no longer have trust that our government has our best interest at heart.  What has happened to our country?  I keep finding more things that reinforce my distrust.  I mourn the innocence that I once had and the security it used to bring to my mind and my daily activities.  I mourn the simplicity that once moved my life through each day.  I mourn 9/11 for so many reasons.

United We StandSince 9/11,  personal stories from survivors have emerged and have been shared.  I have watched intently and cried in knowing that they must feel such pain and that the pain will never leave them.  I have appreciated the stories being shared, however, because it personalizes the day when so many were lost and spoken of in multitudes and not in the one or in the one family.  It must be so hard to share those stories, but on the other hand, it must be so wonderful to share positive stories about the loved ones they lost, often sharing the beauty of their lives in conjunction with the end of their lives on 9/11.  I thank them for those stories and their bravery in sharing them.

Of course, Obama gave a speech today, mentioning Bin Laden being killed, as a not-so-subtle point toward his campaign.  It is so frustrating that the killing of Bin Laden, planned so long prior to Obama being president, is being used in that way.  It should be a victory that is shared across the aisle and with those presidents past.  Instead, the problems are still blamed on Bush and Obama takes these victories and uses them as his own, throwing them in the faces of the U.S. citizens in his high-chinned speeches.  He must not realize that there will always be another Bin Laden, with a different name but with the same goals.

Today we mourn the loss of those who died on 9/11 and because of the cleanup thereafter.  The towers that were not supposed to fall are gone.  The impenetrable walls of The Pentagon being penetrated.  The plane going down in Pennsylvania being dearly smoking dust.  Today we remember those who were heroes as first responders who saved so many and gave their complete selves to a job that no one else could do.  Today we remember that our country once was united in love and compassion.  Today we feel pain, love, support, empathy, sympathy, and more.  If we can remember in the correct light the unity that happened to our country on a very horrifying day, that being September 11, 2012, maybe our country can come back together, resolving issues that seem petty in comparison to what happened on 9/11.

Remembering 9/11.

"Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself - and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That's what real love amounts to - letting a person be what he really is." ~ Jim Morrison

Israel On High Alert! Breaking: Syria Moving Chemical Weapons To Border Positions

ISRAEL ON ALERT AS SYRIA MOVES CHEMICAL WEAPONS TO BORDER POSITIONS

 26 Jul 2012, 2:00 AM PDT

Coinciding perfectly with Obama's warning not to use chemical weapons, Assad's government appears to have shifted the location of their chemical weapons for the very purpose against which Obama warned.

According to reports, "Assad has transferred some of [the] weapons and equipment for mixing chemical components to airports on the [Syrian] border."

These same reports indicate that Assad only plans to use the weapons on foreign invaders or "an outside force," which is in keeping with his pledge. But there are obvious concerns that a desperate Assad may take desperate measures if cornered.

Israel is watching to be sure the weapons haven't been placed at the airports in order to be transferred into Lebanon, and from there into the hands of Hezbollah.

In no uncertain terms Israel made things clear: "The moment we see that the Syrians transfer chemical and biological weapons to Hezbollah, this is a red line for us and from our point of view it's a clear cause for war."

The Pentagon has reached an agreement with Lockheed Martin Corp on a $450 million program to enhance electronic warfare equipment on the F-35 fighter jet, and integrate Israeli-unique systems beginning in 2016, sources familiar with the negotiations told Reuters on Thursday.

According to the report, the deal, to be finalized in the coming weeks, marks a big step forward for Israel's $2.75 billion agreement to buy 19 F-35 jets, which was signed in October 2010and includes options for up to 75 of the radar-evading fighters.

The Pentagon said the Israeli foreign arms sale could be worth up to $15.2 billion if all options are exercised, when it first approved the sale in September 2008.

“This agreement kicks off the Israeli program,” one of the sources told Reuters. “Now all of the agreements are in place.”

The F-35 will allow for even greater collaboration in the coming years with Israel, a critical strategic ally for the United States at a time when much of the Middle East is in turmoil.

The deal comes as Defense Secretary Leon Panetta prepares to visit Israel next week where he will discuss heightened tensions with Iran.

Reuters noted that the deal also provides a vote of confidence in the embattled F-35 program, whose cost and technology challenges have overshadowed a year of progress in flight testing.

The deal will allow increased participation in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program by Israeli companies, including Elbit Systems Ltd. and the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), which will start building wings for the radar-evading warplane.
IAI already builds wings for the F-16 fighter jet, the world's most widely used fighter, also built by Lockheed. Elbit, in a joint venture with Rockwell Collins, makes the advanced helmet used by pilots on the single-seat F-35.

Agreement on development of the new Israeli version of the F-35 will allow Israel to install its own radio and datalink systems, as well as other equipment, on the jets it is buying.

The deal also covers enhancements to the airplane's electronic warfare capabilities that will benefit the United States, Israel and the other nine countries that either have already ordered fighter planes, or plan to in coming years.
The radar-evading, multirole F-35 is the Pentagon's costliest arms purchase, expected to top $396 billion for 2,443 aircraft in three models through the mid-2030s.

Lockheed and its subcontractors are building the stealthy warplane for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps along with Britain and seven other co-development partners: Italy, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands.

In addition to Israel, Japan also has a signed agreement to buy the F-35, which was designed to replace a range of fighter, strike and ground-attack aircraft, including the F-16.

Pentagon Offering FREE Military Hardware To All Police Departments In The United States. What Does This Mean?

The Pentagon Is Offering Free Military Hardware To Every Police Department In The US

Robert Johnson | Dec. 5, 2011, 11:09 AM

The U.S. military has some of the most advanced killing equipment in the world that allows it to invade almost wherever it likes at will.

We produce so much military equipment that inventories of military robots, M-16 assault rifles, helicopters, armored vehicles, and grenade launchers eventually start to pile up and it turns out a lot of these weapons are going straight to American police forces to be used against US citizens.

Benjamin Carlson at The Daily reports on a little known endeavor called the "1033 Program" that gave more than $500 million of military gear to U.S. police forces in 2011 alone.

1033 was passed by Congress in 1997 to help law-enforcement fight terrorism and drugs, but despite a 40-year low in violent crime, police are snapping up hardware like never before. While this year's staggering take topped the charts, next year's orders are up 400 percent over the same period.

This upswing coincides with an increasingly military-like style of law enforcement most recently seen in the Occupy Wall Street crackdowns.

Tim Lynch, director of the Cato Institute's project on criminal justice told The Daily, “The trend toward militarization was well under way before 9/11, but it’s the federal policy of making surplus military equipment available almost for free that has poured fuel on this fire.”

From The Daily:

Thanks to it, cops in Cobb County, Ga. — one of the wealthiest and most educated counties in the U.S. — now have an amphibious tank. The sheriff of Richland County, S.C., proudly acquired a machine-gun-equipped armored personnel carrier that he nicknamed “The Peacemaker.”

This comes on top of grants from the Department of Homeland Security that enable police departments to buy vehicles such as “BearCats” — 16,000-pound bulletproof trucks equipped with battering rams, gun ports, tear-gas dispensers and radiation detectors. To date, more than 500 of these tank-like vehicles have been sold by Lenco, its Massachusetts-based manufacturer, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel.

“It’s kind of had a corrupting influence on the culture of policing in America,” Lynch says. “The dynamic is that you have some officer go to the chief and say, people in the next county have [military hardware], if we don’t take it some other city will. Then they acquire the equipment, they create a paramilitary unit, and everything seems fine.

awesome. Ya militarized police force has been happening for while now. and is sick. Really makes me wonder. It didnt take long for the military industrial complex to creep into our world. We dont just benefit from the spending we will eventually become the recipients of such devices. Eisenhower warned against this.

Can We Get Past The 9/11 Conspiracies & Heal Our Country?

Looks like that may be a feat easier said than done.

NEW YORK CITY-A federal judge has dismissed negligence claims by utility company Con Edison over the destruction of the original 7 World Trade Center on 9/11. Southern District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, in In re September 11 Litigation, said the chain of events that led to the destruction of 7 World Trade was “much too improbable to be consistent with any duty” toward Con Edison by builder and developer Larry Silverstein and Citigroup, the successor-in-interest to the building’s primary tenant, Salomon Brothers.

Al-Qaida calls on Ahmadinejad to end 9/11 conspiracy theories

Terrorist organisation's magazine reportedly says it is 'ridiculous' for Iran's president to blame the attacks on the US government

Osama bin Laden statements after 9/11
Prior to his death on May 2, 2011, the FBI listed bin Laden as one of the "10 Most Wanted" in connection with several incidents including the USS Cole bombing and the 1998 United States embassy bombings in East Africa. The FBI's "FBI Most Wanted Terrorists" poster does not specifically hang responsibility for 9/11 on bin Laden, instead it only states "Bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorist attacks throughout the world."[56]
Messages issued by bin Laden after September 11, 2001 praised the attacks, and explained their motivation while at first denying any involvement.[57] On September 16, 2001, an Al Jazeera news presenter read a message purportedly signed by Osama bin Laden, in which the following words were stated:
I stress that I have not carried out this act, which appears to have been carried out by individuals with their own motivation.[58][59][60]
In an interview with Osama bin Laden, published in the Pakistani newspaper Ummat Karachi on September 28, 2001, he stated: "I have already said that I am not involved in the September 11 attacks in the United States. As a Muslim, I try my best to avoid telling a lie. I had no knowledge of these attacks, nor do I consider the killing of innocent women, children and other humans as an appreciable act."[61] There was reportedly no way to prove the e-mail published in Pakistan came from bin Laden. The Taliban denied he had access to any communications.[62][63]
In late October 2001, Al Jazeera journalist Tayseer Allouni conducted an interview with Osama bin Laden which was videotaped. Al-Jazeera refused to broadcast it[64] and terminated its affiliation agreement with CNN[65] due to CNN's broadcasting of the interview on January 31, 2002.[66] In the interview, bin Laden addressed the September 11 attacks, saying
If inciting people to do that is terrorism, and if killing those who kill our sons is terrorism, then let history be witness that we are terrorists ... We will work to continue this battle, God permitting, until victory or until we meet God before that occurs.[67]
In November 2001, US forces recovered a videotape from a bombed house in Jalalabad, Afghanistan which showed a man purported to be Osama bin Laden talking to Khaled al-Harbi. In the tape, bin Laden talks of planning the attacks. Translations from the tape include the following lines:
...we calculated in advance the number of casualties from the enemy, who would be killed based on the position of the tower. We calculated that the floors that would be hit would be three or four floors. I was the most optimistic of them all...We had notification since the previous Thursday that the event would take place that day. We had finished our work that day and had the radio on...Muhammad (Atta) from the Egyptian family (meaning the al-Qaeda Egyptian group), was in charge of the group...The brothers, who conducted the operation, all they knew was that they have a martyrdom operation and we asked each of them to go to America but they didn't know anything about the operation, not even one letter. But they were trained and we did not reveal the operation to them until they are there and just before they boarded the planes.[68]
In late November 2002, a letter attributed to Osama bin Laden and translated by British Islamists surfaced, often called bin Laden's 'letter to America'. It states the motive behind the September 11 attacks as being: "because you attacked us and continue to attack us" and justifies the selection of a civilian target. Itemizing a list of perceived Western wrongdoings, the letter concludes that "the oppressed have a right to return the aggression" and hinted at further attacks. Also included are a list of demands, advice, and a statement of grievances against the American government and its people.[69]
On February 11, 2003, Al Jazeera broadcast an audio tape purportedly from bin Laden.[70]
Shortly before the US presidential election in 2004, in a taped statement, bin Laden publicly acknowledged al-Qaeda's involvement in the attacks on the US, and admitted his direct link to the attacks. He said that the attacks were carried out because "we are a free people who do not accept injustice, and we want to regain the freedom of our nation."[71]
In an audio message that surfaced on the Internet in May 2006 the speaker, who is alleged to be Osama bin Laden, defends Zacarias Moussaoui, who was undergoing a trial for his participation in the September 11 attacks. The voice in the audio message says
"I begin by talking about the honorable brother Zacarias Moussaoui. The truth is that he has no connection whatsoever with the events of September 11th, and I am certain of what I say, because I was responsible for entrusting the 19 brothers—Allah have mercy upon them—with those raids, and I did not assign brother Zacarias to be with them on that mission."[72]

Osama bin Laden is no more a true representative of Islam than General Mladic, who commanded the Serbian forces, could be held up as an example of Christianity. After all, it is written in the Qur'an that we were made into different peoples not that we might despise each other, but that we might understand each other.

Bin Laden was, though, a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies. Throughout the 80s he was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Al-Qaida, literally "the database", was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians. Inexplicably, and with disastrous consequences, it never appears to have occurred to Washington that once Russia was out of the way, Bin Laden's organisation would turn its attention to the west.

The danger now is that the west's current response to the terrorist threat compounds that original error. So long as the struggle against terrorism is conceived as a war that can be won by military means, it is doomed to fail. The more the west emphasises confrontation, the more it silences moderate voices in the Muslim world who want to speak up for cooperation. Success will only come from isolating the terrorists and denying them support, funds and recruits, which means focusing more on our common ground with the Muslim world than on what divides us.
