'CH' STANDS FOR ... CHICKEN? A big dark hole in the sun's atmosphere, a 'coronal hole', is turning toward Earth spewing solar wind. According to NASA's official rubber chicken, it looks an awful lot like a bird:
Coronal holes are places where the sun's magnetic field opens up and allows the solar wind to escape. A chicken-shaped stream of solar wind flowing from this coronal hole will reach Earth on June 5th - 7th, possibly stirring geomagnetic storms. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

This electron flux plot contains the 5-minute averaged integral electron flux (electrons/cm2-s-sr) with energies greater than or equal to 0.8 MeV and greater than or equal to 2 MeV at GOES-13 (W75). These data are invalid during a significant proton event because of sensor contamination at the GOES spacecraft. Enhanced fluxes of electrons for an extended period of time have been associated with deep dielectric charging anomalies.

Earth's Magnetic Field Disturbed. Impact Source Unknown.

Yesterday:SWEET LIGHTS: For reasons not fully understood by forecasters, a disturbance rippled through Earth's magnetic field on Feb. 14th. Perhaps it was Cupid's arrow. The impact sparked some sweet lights around the Arctic Circle:
"On several occasions the sky was full of auroras from horizon to horizon," says photographer and aurora tour guide Chad Blakley of Abisko National Park, Sweden. "We had many happy couples celebrating with us tonight. Most of our guests agreed that it was the best Valentine's day that they had ever shared together."
There has been some speculation that the display was caused by a CME, launched from the sun on Feb. 10th and reaching Earth on Feb. 14th. However, there is no clear signature of a CME impact in local solar wind data.
Update: Geomagnetic activity intensified even more on Feb. 15th when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth tilted south, opening a crack in Earth's magnetic field. Solar wind poured in and fueled a G1-class geomagnetic storm, now subsiding.

UPDATE: CHANCE OF ANOTHER X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE UPGRADED...Monster Active Sun Spot Region Has Rotated Toward Earth & Sent Us An X-Class Solar Flare

CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters have upgraded the chance of X-class solar flares today to 20%. The source would be AR1339, one of the biggest sunspots in many years. The active region rotated over the sun's eastern limb two days ago and now it is turning toward Earth.
The sunspot has already unleashed one X-flare on Nov. 3rd around 2027 UT. A movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the extreme ultraviolet flash:
The flare created waves of ionization in Earth's upper atmosphere, altering the normal propagation of radio waves over Europe and the Americas. In Ireland, the flare's effect was felt even after dark.
A cloud of plasma or "CME" raced away from the blast site at 1100 km/s. The CME is not heading for Earth. It is, however, heading for Mercury and Venus. Click on the arrow to view a movie of the CME's forecast track:
Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab say the CME will hit Mercury on Nov. 4th around 16:14 UT. NASA's MESSENGER probe in orbit around Mercury will be monitoring the effects of the impact. If the CME overwhelms Mercury's relatively weak magnetic field, it could scour material off the planet's surface creating a temporary atmosphere and adding material to Mercury's comet-like tail. The CME should hit Venus on Nov. 5th; the gossamer cloud will probably break harmlessly against the top of planet's ultra-dense atmosphere.

X-FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected an X2-class solar flare. The source is huge sunspot AR1339, described below. Stay tuned for updates.

MAGNIFICENT SUNSPOT: One of the largest sunspots in years is rotating over the sun's northeastern limb. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of AR1339 during the early hours of Nov. 3rd:
Measuring some 40,000 km wide and at least twice that in length, the sprawling sunspot group is an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. Two or three of the sunspot's dark cores are wider than Earth itself.
Naturally, such a large sunspot has potential for strong flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of M-class solar flares during the next 24 hours. One such eruption has already occured: An M4-flare at 2200 UT on Nov. 2nd produced a bright flash of extreme UV radiation (SDO movie) and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. The CME is not heading our way. Future CMEs could have greater effect as AR1339 turns toward Earth in the days ahead.




2011-11-03 15:06   A benevolent monster of a region?
A monster of an active region, NOAA number 11339, has rotated on to the Earth-facing side of the Sun.  This is the largest active region in almost seven years, since January 2005.  It has produced only a few minor flares so far, but SWPC will be keeping a close eye on it to watch for any threatening behavior.  This region is likely to remain a threat for the 11 days or so it will take to rotate back to the far side of the Sun.

Spectacular Sun Diving Comet & Coronal Mass Ejection (CME)..."unexpected explosion".

COMET AND CME: A comet discovered by amateur astronomers on Friday, Sept. 30th, disintegrated in spectacular fashion the very next day when it plunged into the sun. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory recorded the comet's last hours. The end was punctuated by an unexpected explosion; click on the image to set the scene in motion:
Watch the movie again. The timing of the CME so soon after the comet dove into the sun suggests a link. But what? There is no known mechanism for comets to trigger solar explosions. Before 2011 most solar physicists would have discounted the events of Oct. 1st as pure coincidence--and pure coincidence is still the most likely explanation. Earlier this year, however, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) watched another sungrazer disintegrate in the sun's atmosphere. On July 5, 2011, the unnamed comet appeared to interact with plasma and magnetic fields in its surroundings as it fell apart. Could a puny comet cause a magnetic instability that might propagate and blossom into a impressive CME? The question is not so crazy as it once seemed to be.http://spaceweather.com/

UPDATE: Another day of VERY active solar activity with an M-Class Flare.

SOLAR RADIO BURSTS: This week's sharp increase in solar activity has turned the sun into a radio transmitter. Bursts of shortwave static are coming from the unstable magnetic canopy of sunspot 1283.

Tuesday in New Mexico, amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft recorded some samples at 21 MHz: listen. Radio listeners should remain alert for this kind of solar activity as sunspot 1283 continues to seethe.

STRONG FLARE ACTIVITY CONTINUES: On Sept. 8th at 1546 UT, sunspot 1283 unleashed an M6-class solar flare. This continues the active region's 3-day trend of daily powerful eruptions. Yesterday's blast, an X1.8-class event, produced a bright flash of extreme UV radiation and hurled an inky-dark plume of plasma into space. Since Sept. 6th, sunspot 1283 has propelled at least three CMEs in the general direction of Earth. Glancing blows from the incoming clouds will commence sometime on Sept. 9th and continue through Sept. 11th, possibly sparking minor geomagnetic storms. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

STRONG SOLAR ACTIVITY: Sunspot 1283 is crackling with solar flares. Yesterday, Sept. 6th, the active region produced an M5.3-class eruption at 0150 UT followed by a X2.1-class event at 2220 UT. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded this extreme UV flash from the X-flare:
The flares produced waves of ionization in Earth's upper atmosphere, briefly altering the propagation of low-frequency radio signals around our planet. Moreover, the two eruptions hurled clouds of plasma (CMEs) in our direction. CME impacts, geomagnetic storms and auroras are expected on Sept. 8-10. X-flares of Solar Cycle 24: There have been only a small number of X-flares since the beginning of new Solar Cycle 24. Here is a complete list so far: Feb. 15, 2011 (X2), March 9, 2011 (X1), Aug. 9, 2011 (X7), Sept. 6, 2011 (X2). Before these four, the previous X-flare occured on Dec.14, 2006, (X1) during old Solar Cycle 23.

Strong X-Class Flare:
A strong X2.1 Class Solar Flare took place at 22:20 UTC Tuesday and was centered around Sunspot 1283. Another CME looks to have resulted and a Sun facing Lasco C2 movie is below. A Type II and Type IV sweep frequency event occurred as well as a TenFlare (10.7cm Radio Burst). The proton levels are also at minor levels.

Partially Earth directed CME: When watching the new Lasco C2 movie which is below, the explosion caused by the X2.1 Solar Flare is a full halo CME and has the best chance of impacting earth in some way. The first CME created by the M5.3 will for the most part miss earth. As with any explosion, only time will tell as to what kind of impact they will have on earth. Many times they end up missing altogether.

Solar Flux Correction: The solar flux value above was reading as 150. The correct value for Sept 6th is actually 112.
Solar Update: Solar activity has been high with multiple M-Class flares and one X-Class event over the past 48 hours. Two full halo Coronal Mass Ejections took place on Tuesday due to an M5.3 and X2.1 Solar Flares. Only a minor impact is expected. Sunspot 1283 may produce further M-Class activity. Elsewhere, all other sunspot groups are quiet.

March 10 X-Class Solar Flare. March 11 Huge Earthquake Activity. This Flare Is More Direct & Larger.

Does the solar flare activity cause earthquakes on Earth? There has been a bit of a rumble about that among scholars and amateurs alike. In previous patterns regarding the occurrence of X-Class Flares and earthquakes, there seems to be a very likely correspondence that between X-Class flares and large earthquakes. Since we have just encountered an X-Class Flare that was faced directly at Earth, I put out the warning right now that there will likely be a large increase in earthquake activity, even an extraordinarily large quake.





Coincidences happen, but follow what is going on as a scientific observation of patterns. When the X-Class Flare occurred on March 10, 2011, the next day, Japan experienced their enormous and destructive earthquake(s) and tsunami.

Watch what happens in the next few days and be working on your preparedness, i.e., 72 Hour Kits, Food and Water storage, family earthquake drills, etc. Let's see what happens in the next few days.

Republic of Vanuatu was hit by a major 7.5-magnitude earthquake. It hit off the coast of the South Pacific island of Vanuatu on Sunday.


The quake struck at 3:55 am (1655 GMT Saturday) at a depth of 40 kilometers (25 miles), around 60 kilometres south of Port Vila, the capital of the island nation.


There was no tsunami warning in effect on the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center website and there were no immediate reports of damage.
Minutes after the first quake a second smaller 5.9-magnitude tremor was detected by seismologists.


Vanuatu - a string of more than 80 islands once known as the New Hebrides - achieved independence from France and Britain in 1980.
Most of the islands are inhabited; some have active volcanoes.
Vanuatu is mountainous and much of it is covered with tropical rainforests. Like most of the area, it is prone to earthquakes and tidal waves. Most of the people live in rural areas and practise subsistence agriculture.


Local traditions are strong. Women, for example, generally have lower social standing than men and have fewer educational opportunities.
Despite strong growth, the economy has struggled to meet the needs of Vanuatu's expanding population.
The main sources of revenue are agriculture and eco-tourism. Both depend on the weather, and when, as in 1999, cyclones and persistent rain hit Vanuatu, both suffer.

Vanuatu Earthquakes Produce Small Tsunami

Two of the strongest earthquakes recorded so far this year have struck The Coral Sea region of the Pacific Ocean.
A 7.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded southwest of Efate island, which is part of the Shefa Province in The Republic of Vanuatu, at 5:55 PM GMT. It was measured at a depth of 30km.
The second earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.0 and prompted a tsunami warning, struck at 7:19 PM GMT about 69 kilometers (42 miles) south-southwest of the capital of Port-Vila on the island of Efate. It struck about 28.5 kilometers (17.7 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).   5.9, 5.6 and 5.0 magnitude aftershocks were also recorded.
The Vanuatu Meteorological Service issued a tsunami advisoryfor its central and southern islands after the second earthquake, urging all residents to move to higher ground until the all clear is given. A tsunami advisory is the highest level of alert in Vanuatu.
The agency said tsunami waves of 1.05 meter (3.4 feet) had arrived on the island of Efate less than an hour after the earthquake. It said there was no damage from the initial waves and has since cancelled the advisory.
Vanuatu lies on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire‘ and regularly experiences seismic and volcanic activity, with over 2000 seismic events reported each year. The island nation, which is of volcanic origin, is some 1,750 kilometres (1,090 mi) east of northern Australia, 500 kilometres (310 mi) northeast of New Caledonia, west of Fiji, and southeast of the Solomon Islands, near New Guinea.





6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Japan's Northeast Coast

(RTTNews) - A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale has struck off Japan's northeastern coast, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported Friday.
The agency added that a 50 cm tsunami advisory has been issued for the coast of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, the two regions devastated by a massive quake and tsunami in March.
According to the agency, the quake struck at a depth of about 20 kilometers, with its epicenter located slightly south to that of the 9.0 magnitude temblor that struck the region on March 11.
Friday's quake rocked the Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures and the tremor was felt in Capital Tokyo also. Local reports indicated that buildings in Tokyo swayed mildly in the quake.
Earthquakes frequently rock Japan as it sits on top of four tectonic plates. The latest quake comes when Japan is struggling to come to grips with the March 11 catastrophe that killed more than 15,000 people and caused wide-spread devastation.
The March quake and accompanying tsunami had knocked out the cooling systems at the the Fukushima Daiichi civilian nuclear plant, leading to meltdowns and radiation leaks that are yet to be plugged.

Strong 6.8 earthquake hits Fukushima Japan, tsunami warning up

A strong 6.8 earthquake struck Friday at the northeastern coast of Japan near the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant which was severely damaged by the March 11 super earthquake and tsunami that caused the death of close to 20,000 people near Fukushima
tsunami warning was issued in the Fukushima and Miyagi Perfectures but was lifted 35 minutes later.
The quake reportedly occurred at 2:36 pm (0536GMT) with its epicenter off Fukushima prefecture at a depth of 20 kilometers.
Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the company that operates the badly-damaged Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, said there were no damages on its Onagawa Plant which has been shut since March.
However, a report say "ground under Fukushima plant is cracking and radioactive steam is coming up — Melted core may be moving out of building" enenews.com reports.
In a video interview, Dr. Robert Jacobs, Hiroshima Peace Institute: “It’s a very serious and alarming development because this started to happen specifically after two large earthquakes in the last few weeks, there was a 6.4 on the 31 of July 31 and a 6.0 on August 12″.
Meanwhile, the NY Times reports that radioactive contamination in rice, a national grain, has been found by Japanese inspectors Friday.
The discovery is likely to fan out growing fears of radioactive contamination on crops and basic agricultural produce and the general safety of Japan's food supply.

(TOKYO, JAPAN) -- A strong earthquake off the coast of Japan Friday rattled nerves in the earthquake and tidal wave ravaged nation and prompted an immediate Tsunami advisory.

Japan’s northeastern coast was hit Friday by a 6.5-magnitude earthquake, triggering a brief tsunami advisory for waves of up to 20 inches. The U.S. Geological Survey pegged the quake at 6.3 on the Richter scale.

Under the Richter scale, designed to quantify the energy in an earthquake, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0.

A 6.5 quake has the energy of an 85-kiloton bomb. Only about 120 earthquakes a year hit that level of energy release.

The earthquake, the biggest to hit Japan in a month, struck at 2:36 p.m. local time and was centered 70 miles off the coast of Fukushima and 175 northeast of Tokyo.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and the Tokyo Electric Power Co. said that its disaster damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was experiencing no further problems.

At the nuclear plant, some of the staff was temporarily evacuated immediately after the earthquake hit and bullet train lines in the region also briefly stopped.

The tsunami advisory was issued for both Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, two of the areas hardest hit by the devastating March 11th 9.0-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of high waves caused by Friday’s earthquake.

Japan’s northeast coast has been the site to more than 1,000 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or higher since March.

Comet Elenin:

On 10 December 2010, Leonid Elenin, a little known amateur Russian astronomer from Lubertsy City, in Russia, discovered Comet C/2010 X1, a comet now universally known as Elenin. The researcher from the Russian Academy of Sciences spotted the C/2010 X1 while reviewing four-minute footage from the ISON-NB Observatory (International Scientific Optical Network's Robotic Observatory) in New Mexico.

At the time of discovery, an analysis of its orbit predicted that its perihelion (closest orbital distance to the sun) was a very negligible 8.8 Astronomical Unit (1a.u equals 149,598,000 kilometers) from us.

Recalculation of its orbital path one month later shows that the Elenin’s perihelion has shrunk to a projected 0.15 to 0.24 a.u.

According to Mensur Omerbashich he used the comet C/2010 X1 (Elenin) for his research, as it has been adding to robustness in terms of very strong seismicity since 2007 (in terms of strongest seismicity: since 1965).

The Elenin will continue intensifying the Earth's very strong seismicity until August-October, 2011. Approximate forecast of earthquakes based on my discoveries is feasible.
