People on the north coast of Labrador say scores of dead seals have been washing ashore since early December.

A conservation officer with the area's Inuit government estimated late last week that hundreds of adult and young seals have died in the area between Hopedale and Makkovik this winter.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is testing the carcasses, but Nunatsiavut conservation officer Ian Winters said many people in the area believe DFO hasn't acted quickly enough.

"I think they should have been up here earlier, if you're asking me. A lot of people said the same thing. So, maybe it's not on top of their agenda," he said.

Usually at this time of year seals are on sea ice south of Hopedale, said Winters, but he said there is very little ice there now.

Last month, people in northern Labrador found the bodies of dead seal pups on the coast.

At the time, a federal seal researcher said the early birth of seal pups in Labrador may be an indication the area's seal population has grown too large.

DFO researcher Garry Stenson said that seal population growth could lead to reproductive problems.

"What you expect in a population that is starting to regulate itself are things like lower reproductive rates and variable reproductive rates, but also higher pup mortality and also higher juvenile mortality," he said Monday in St. John's.

Stenson said the harp seal population of Atlantic Canada is now at between eight and nine million. A 2004 assessment of seal stocks estimated the harp seal population in the area at between 4.6 and 7.2 million.

Stenson said the DFO received five reports of seals giving birth on the coast of Labrador in December, although the nomadic sea mammals normally give birth in late February or early March.

He said the early births are happening on land rather than ice floes and it's unlikely the newborn pups will survive.

It looks like something out of a “Ghostbusters” movie. A mysterious, and smelly, greenish-yellow goop fell from the sky in upstate New York last week. The FAA denies it came from a plane (blaming birds), and now the town is puzzled as to what it is:

ABC News reports:

Initial suspicions focused on “blue ice,” the frozen human excrement known to fall from passing jetliners, but the FAA investigated and quickly dismissed that possibility.

“The local flight standards inspectors investigated the situation and determined it was not from an aircraft,” FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac told ABC News.

The Amherst Town Supervisor’s Office said that they are looking into the situation.

Cracks in the Earth's weakening magnetosphere could be causing the deaths of birds, fish and other animals that are magnetically in-tuned with the Earth.

Mass deaths of animals started January 1, 2011 in Beebe, Arkansas. Thousands of red-wing blackbirds were found dead throughout the town in Arkansas, leaving many residents confused. Then there were the fish that died in the Arkansas River. At first, these incidents were thought to be just random occurrences such as natural selection, but it seems there may be more to these events. There have also been incidents of mass animals deaths in other countries as well such as 150,000 Red Tilapia found dead in Vietnam, and the 40,000 crabs found dead in Britain. These deaths are happening around the world, and the media cannot simply blame stress and thunderstorms as the cause.

According to LiveScience.com, the Earth's magnetic field is shifting. The magnetic North Pole is currently "hovering over the North Sea and moving toward Siberia. This means two Florida airports are renumbering their runways. " As each year goes by, the rate at which the magnetic field is adjusting is increasing. Not only are the poles shifting, but they are going somewhat haywire. One home-owner in Missouri noted that his compass moved 20 degrees last week after he had adjusted the compass to true North. That evening he adjusted his compass and a couple days later he noted that his compass was 3 degrees off. Compasses being off are becoming more noticeable as the Earth's magnetic field continues to shift.

Not only is the Earth's magnetic field shifting, but it is also weakening. Some of the weaker points in the magnetic field have been noted by NASA to have "cracks". In fact, NASA has pointed out that scientists have noted these "cracks" before, but have recently found out in the last few years that these cracks do not just open and close simultaneously. The cracks can remain open for hours or even long periods of time "allowing the solar wind to gush through and power stormy space weather".

"We discovered that our magnetic shield is drafty, like a house with a window stuck open during a storm," said Dr. Harald Frey of the University of California, Berkeley, "... our magnetic shield takes the brunt of space storms, but some energy continually slips through its cracks..." (Nasa.gov)

One of these areas where the mass deaths of birds and fish could be due to a crack in the Earth's magnetosphere is in Beebe, Arkansas. Arkansas and Louisiana are within a magnetic anomaly zone. It is important to note that the regions where the birds and fish died were also regions of high amounts of magnetic absorption.

As of today, January 13, 2011, SpaceWeather.com reported," An active region on the far side of the sun erupted this morning, hurling a bright CME into space... over the sun's eastern limb...The source of this activity...is on the farside of the sun now, but won't remain there. The sun's rotation is turning it toward Earth." It will be interesting to see if as the source of this large CME travels closer to Earth if the numbers of mass animal deaths increases.

Brazil Flood Death Toll Could Reach 1,000

The death toll from flooding and mudslides near Rio de Janeiro last week could approach 1,000 victims, after authorities on Wednesday disclosed a list of at least 207 people still missing in addition to the 730 confirmed dead.

After a week of relief and recovery efforts, authorities said an accurate list of fatalities remains elusive because victims are still being found daily. In some of the worst hit areas, officials said, entire families disappeared, making it difficult to identify some of the victims and tabulate a full roster of those missing.

Though some of those considered missing may still be found in hospitals or shelters around the affected region, many of them are feared to remain amid the rubble, mud, and floodwater left behind by the downpours.

Rains continued to batter southern Brazil, as flash floods from the rainy season killed at least one person in Sao Paulo and disrupted traffic and services throughout the region.

There was huge excitement in the news world this week as reports started coming through that massive amounts of animals were suddenly dying off in Arkansas. Not only would this story help end the slow news rut of the holidays, it also implied a coming end of the world in which we would all die horribly. However, this excitement soon turned to disappointment as the week went on and everyone was still alive.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper had joyfully heralded what, at the time, seemed like the approaching apocalypse with an interview with actor Kirk Cameron. A source amongst the Anderson Cooper 360 staff said that there was definitely “an air of sadness” in the studio now that it’s become increasingly clear that the dead animals were not actually a sign that all of life was coming to an end.

Asked for comment, Cooper responded, “Man, I really thought we were all going to be writhing in torment in a fiery abyss by now. Oh well, guess I’ll talk about how OWN’s doing.”

At Fox News, researchers had a brief uplift yesterday when there was a report that hundreds of fish were seriously ill in a pond in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, it turned out that it was merely caused by a leak at a local nuclear power plant. The field team sent to investigate was then forced to quickly turn around and drive to a Chicago pet store that promised sickly dogs.

“That was a huge disappointment,” said anchor Megyn Kelly. “We were so set on doing a report on how all of our lives would soon be over within the wink of an eye thanks to divine retribution. That’s what you learn in this business, though. Some things just don’t work out.”

Not every news personality has been taking the continued existence of man so well, however. Reports have surfaced that a producer at MSNBC has been arrested for slaughtering a number of livestock at an upstate New York farm. Details are still sketchy, but an eye witness claimed that the man was yelling about how “this was all a test” and that “we need to join in the murder.” Only then, he said, would God finally kill us all.

Of course, television news wasn’t the only area where the seemingly-imminent end times were eagerly awaited. Online outlets also expected a great amount of incoming traffic in the time leading up to and including the final moments before the human experiment was finally snuffed out. In fact, Mediaite’s Colby Hall explained that the animal death stories had brought in great numbers for the site. He did, though, point out that the anticipation of all of our demise had had to be handled differently when done from an online perspective.

“It’s a different world, the Internet. You don’t just come out and say you wish every day that God Almighty would pluck us out of the sky like a pesky gnat. No, not at all. You ironically say you wish every day that God Almighty would pluck us out of the sky like a pesky gnat. I mean, obviously you still hope for it, you just don’t say it out loud. The Internet’s a different ballgame. It’s hipper. Did you know some of our writers have their own Tumblrs?”

Whatever the case, the world has kept spinning and life has gone on.

“We’ll just keep doing our jobs,” said Kelly as she re-organized her office (she had gleefully destroyed it earlier in the week, expecting it to be unnecessary once she and everyone else was killed and returned to the void of nothingness from which we came). “Personally, I plan on doing a number of stories about how fat Kim Jong Il looks. Hopefully he’ll see it and nuke us all. Y’know, everyone’s just gotta do their part to ensure we’ll all be dead soon.”
