A Libyan government spokesman has announced Muammar Gaddafi's youngest son Saif was killed in a NATO air strike on Saturday. Gaddafi himself was in the large residential villa that was targeted in the strike, along with his wife and other friends and relatives, but was not harmed. "The attack resulted in the martyrdom of brother Saif al-Arab Gaddafi, 29 years old, and three of the leader's grandchildren," said spokesman Moussa Ibrahim. He called the strike "a direct operation to assassinate the leader of this country," but stressed that "the leader himself is in good health." Journalists have reported severe damage at the building and claim one undetonated bomb is still there.

Sayf al-Arab Gaddafi, embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's youngest son, and three of his grandchildren have been killed in an airstrike, a government spokesman says.
"The house of Mr Sayf al-Arab Muammar Gaddafi ... who is the youngest of the leader's children, was attacked tonight with full power. The leader with his wife was there in the house with other friends and relatives," Moussa Ibrahim told a news conference in Tripoli early on Sunday morning.
"The attack resulted in the martyrdom of brother Sayf al-Arab Muammar Gaddafi, 29 years old, and three of the leader's grandchildren," Ibrahim said.
"The leader himself is in good health; he wasn't harmed. His wife is also in good health; she wasn't harmed, (but) other people were injured," he said.
"This was a direct operation to assassinate the leader of this country."
Ibrahim had earlier taken journalists to the remnants of a house in Tripoli.
Given the level of destruction, it is unclear that anyone could have survived, raising the possibility that if Gaddafi was there, he had left beforehand.

A NATO strike has killed Saif al-Arab Gaddafi, the 29-year-old son of the embattled Libyan leader, according to a Libyan government spokesman.
Moussa Ibrahim says three of Moamar Gaddafi's grandsons were also killed but the leader himself was unharmed.
"The house of Saif al-Arab Gaddafi ... who is the youngest of the leader's children, was attacked tonight with full power," he said.
"The leader with his wife was there in the house with other friends and relatives."
Saif al-Arab was a civilian and a student who had studied in Germany.
But Mr Ibrahim told a news conference in Tripoli that Moamar Gaddafi himself was not hurt.
"The leader himself is in good health; he wasn't harmed," he said.
"His wife is also in good health; she wasn't harmed [but] other people were injured.
"This was a direct operation to assassinate the leader of this country."

A Nato air strike in Tripoli has killed the youngest son of Libyan leaderMuammar Gaddafi, a Libyan government spokesman has said.
Saif al-Arab Gaddafi, 29, was killed along with three of Muammar Gaddafi's grandsons, according to reports.
The Libyan leader was in the building at the time of the strike, but was unharmed. Several of Gaddafi's friends and relatives were wounded.
Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said: "This was a direct operation to assassinate the leader of this country."
"The attack resulted in the martyrdom of brother Saif al-Arab Gaddafi and three of the leader's grandchildren," he said.
"The leader with his wife was there in the house with other friends and relatives. The leader himself is in good health – he wasn't harmed. [Muammar Gaddafi's] wife is also in good health."
Nato forces are permitted under United Nations resolution 1973, passed in March, to use 'all necessary measures' to protect civilians from pro-Gaddafi forces.
Ibrahim added: "We think now it is clear to everyone that what is happening in Libya has nothing to do with the protection of civilians.
This is not permitted by international law. Nato does not care to test our promises, the west does not care to test our statements. Their only care is to rob us of our freedom."

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • U.S. Tomahawk missiles land around Tripoli and Misrata, official says
  • Gadhafi has failed to comply with cease-fire
  • "The U.S. will be at the front end" of a multiphase approach, official says
(CNN) -- The U.S. military launched its first airstrikes on Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's air defenses, a senior military official said Saturday.
U.S. Tomahawk missiles landed in the area around Tripoli and Misrata, the official said, adding that the action was taken after Gadhafi failed to comply with a cease-fire.
"He's clearly been on the offensive," the official said of Gadhafi. "He said that he was going to do a cease-fire and he continued to move his forces into Benghazi."
The attacks on Gadhafi's forces will be part of a multiphase approach in a sequential and deliberate manner, according to the official.
"The U.S. will be at the front end of this, providing the unique capabilities that the U.S. has," the official said.

China's Most Secret Weapon: The Messenger Pigeon

Xinhua, Fan Changguo / AP
Though the world's attention has recently been focused on the unveiling of China's first ever stealth fighter jet, the Chinese military has been busy investing in another type of furtive flyer: the humble messenger pigeon. According to reports in state media, late last year, the Chengdu division of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) began training 10,000 pigeons as part of a push to build a "reserve pigeon army" that would provide support to the military's conventional communications infrastructure in the event that war rendered its plethora of modern technology unusable.
"These military pigeons will be primarily called upon to conduct special military missions between troops stationed at our land borders or ocean borders," air force military expert Chen Hong told China Central Television after the announcement. According to reports, the birds will be dispersed to communications bases across China's remote and mountainous southwestern region, particularly around the Himalayan foothills. The pigeons, flying at speeds of up to 75 miles (120 km) per hour, will be trained to carry loads of up to 3.5 oz. (100 g).(See the top 10 militant animals.)
The birds have a long history of service in China. Messenger pigeons have been used in the country for more than a thousand years, and pigeons have been earning their military stripes here since at least the late 1930s. In 1937 Lieutenant Claire Lee Chennault, a retired U.S. Air Force pilot, arrived in China to head up a group of U.S.-sponsored aviators known as the Flying Tigers, tasked with taking to the air to repel the Japanese invasion of the mainland. He brought with him hundreds of messenger pigeons to help with the war effort, and after the war, he left the birds behind. That group of pigeons would form the core of the PLA's first military pigeon brigade.
Today the pigeons serve alongside 10,000 dogs in PLA service, guarding military warehouses, assisting special police forces and supporting border troops. Two thousand new dogs are reportedly signed up each year. Horses, once an important part of the military operations, have fallen out of fashion, as the PLA cavalry has played an increasingly peripheral role. There are said to be fewer than 1,000 cavalry soldiers left in the PLA, and those who remain mostly take part in exhibitions or movie shoots.

Updates On Tripoli Situation:
One blogger reported several hours ago: "more people missing in Tripoli." The same resident of the Libyan capital then asked: "how many people will be kidnapped today?"
Another Tripoli blogger wrote a short time ago:
The new strategy of [Qaddafi] is to arrest anyone who even MAY demonstrate against him! His arresting people that are related to people that defected to the East, he is arresting people from Zintan and Misurata... etc.
He will use these people to blackmail their relatives so they give up so he doesn't kill them. He may use these people as people shields so he can hide behind them if it comes to it.
Mark my words... if this Friday we have a protest on the streets I think the following...
[Qaddafi] will either start shooting again at the protesters and in this case he will bring down on his head the wrath of the world and it will be his end
or he will start arresting people and use them as human shields, or he may use these events to gather data on the demonstrators.
I think Thursday will be full of arrests to reduce the number of protests planned in Friday. If you [don't] hear from me tomorrow then you [will] know.

On Tuesday, the same Bayda blogger uploaded this clip, in which a young boy, speaking in English, urged residents of Tripoli to take to the streets and fight for their freedom:
