THE FIFTH DIMENSION

Abstract five-dimensional space occurs frequently in mathematics, and is a legitimate construct. Whether or not the real universe in which we live is somehow five-dimensional is a topic that is debated and explored in several branches of physics, including astrophysics and particle physics.

In physics, the fifth dimension is a hypothetical extra dimension beyond the usual three spatial dimensions and one time dimension of Relativity. The Kaluza–Klein theory used the fifth dimension to unifygravity with the electromagnetic force; e.g. Minkowski space and Maxwell's equations in vacuum can be embedded in a five-dimensional Riemann curvature tensor ^{[1][unreliable source?]}. Kaluza–Klein theory now is seen as essentially a gauge theory with gauge group the circle group. M-theory suggests that space–time has 11 dimensions, seven of which are "rolled up" to below the subatomic level. Physicists have speculated that the graviton, a particle thought to carry the force of gravity, may "leak" into the fifth or higher dimensions, which would explain how gravity is significantly weaker than the other threefundamental forces.

In 1993 the physicist Gerard 't Hooft put forward the holographic principle, which explains that the information about an extra dimension is visible as a curvature in a spacetime with one fewer dimension. For example, holograms are three-dimensional pictures placed on a two-dimensional surface, which gives the image a curvature when the observer moves. Similarly, in general relativity, the fourth dimension is manifested in observable three dimensions as the curvature path of a moving infinitesimal (test) particle. Hooft has speculated that the fifth dimension is really the spacetime fabric.

The "fifth dimension" in popular culture

In popular usage, the "fifth dimension" is often used to refer to unexplored or unknown aspects of the universe, and not necessarily to the mathematical concept of a 5-dimensional space. For example, the opening narration of The Twilight Zone begins: "There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man." In the fictional universe of DC Comics, the "fifth dimension" is said to be the place from whichMister Mxyzptlk, a Superman villain, comes. In 1966, The Byrds released an album titled Fifth Dimension, using the fifth dimension as a metaphor for unexplored and unknown aspects of the universe and oneself. The 5th Dimension is the name of an American vocal music group popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In Hindu philosophy, the fifth dimension of love of the Divine is termed by the Gaudiya Vaisnavas as turyatita, the dimension of the soul's Soul. The original Doctor Who episode hints at the 5th dimension being key to the abilities of the TARDIS.^{[citation needed]}

Other uses of the "fifth dimension" are closer to its mathematical meaning. For example, the novel The Boy Who Reversed Himself features 4-dimensional and 5-dimensional spaces, using the mathematical fact that a 3-dimensional object can be turned into its mirror image if additional spatial dimensions were available for it to rotate through. The characters in Madeleine L'Engle's novel A Wrinkle In Time use the fifth dimension^{[citation needed]} as a "dimensional shortcut" to travel through space. A similar concept appears in the Powerpuff Girls episode Bring Back Jojo, where a creature able to see higher dimensions takes a dimensional shortcut through a fifth dimension to travel through time. The Red Dwarf episode "Parallel Universe" refers to the fifth dimension as the space in which multiple four-dimensional spaces exist.

Not all references to the "fifth dimension" in the mathematical sense involve time travel or space travel; Douglas Adams' book Mostly Harmless advances the idea of the fifth dimension being probability.

In Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, valet Koroviev in an explanation to Margarita attributes the expansion of a small apartment into the size of a large auditorium to the fifth dimension.

In the song "M Theory", recording artist R.D. Peoples discusses thoroughly the fifth and eleventh dimensions. The song goes on to discuss dark matter, advanced beings and parallel universes; also sampling many quotes from Dr. Michio Kaku and Phil Plait.

According to Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History there is an apparent reference to the Mayan cycle ending 2012 date in the Comalcalco ruin not far from where the original was discovered.


The Comalcalco Temple is a rare structure in that it was fabricated entirely out of brick. One such brick is where the inscription was found years ago.

Yes, you read that right, it was discovered several years ago and undergone intensive study. The reason so few are aware of this inscribed brick is due to the fact that it’s never been on display.
Here are the details of the finding and what it means for the future:

Most experts had cited only one surviving reference to the date in Mayan glyphs, a stone tablet from the Tortuguero site in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco.

But the National Institute of Anthropology and History said in a statement that there is in fact another apparent reference to the date at the nearby Comalcalco ruin. The inscription is on the carved or molded face of a brick. Comalcalco is unusual among Mayan temples in that it was constructed of bricks.

Arturo Mendez, a spokesman for the institute, said the fragment of inscription had been discovered years ago and has been subject to thorough study. It is not on display and is being kept in storage at the institute.

The “Comalcalco Brick,” as the second fragment is known, has been discussed by experts in some online forums. Many still doubt that it is a definite reference to Dec. 21, 2012 or Dec. 23, 2012, the dates cited by proponents of the theory as the possible end of the world.

Referring to past or future?
“Some have proposed it as another reference to 2012, but I remain rather unconvinced,” David Stuart, a specialist in Mayan epigraphy at the University of Texas at Austin, said in a message to The Associated Press.

Stuart said the date inscribed on the brick “‘is a ‘Calendar Round,’ a combination of a day and month position that will repeat every 52 years.”

The brick date does coincide with the end of the 13th Baktun; Baktuns were roughly 394-year periods, and 13 was a significant, sacred number for the Mayas. The Mayan Long Count calendar begins in 3114 B.C., and the 13th Baktun ends around Dec. 21, 2012.

But the date on the brick could also correspond to similar dates in the past, Stuart said.

“There’s no reason it couldn’t be also a date in ancient times, describing some important historical event in the Classic period. In fact, the third glyph on the brick seems to read as the verb huli, ‘he/she/it arrives,’” Stuart wrote.

“There’s no future tense marking (unlike the Tortuguero phrase), which in my mind points more to the Comalcalco date being more historical than prophetic.”

Cryptic characteristics
Both inscriptions — the Tortuguero tablet and the Comalcalco brick — were probably carved about 1,300 years ago, and both are cryptic in some ways.

The Tortuguero inscription describes something that is supposed to occur in 2012 involving Bolon Yokte, a mysterious Mayan god associated with both war and creation. However, erosion and a crack in the stone make the end of the passage almost illegible, though some read the last eroded glyphs as perhaps saying, “He will descend from the sky.”

The Comalcalco brick is also odd in that the molded or inscribed faces of the bricks were probably laid facing inward or covered with stucco, suggesting they were not meant to be seen.
The Institute of Anthropology and History has long said rumors of a world-ending or world-changing event in late December 2012 are a Westernized misinterpretation of Mayan calendars.
The institute repeated Thursday that “Western messianic thought has twisted the cosmovision of ancient civilizations like the Maya.”

The institute’s experts say the Maya saw time as a series of cycles that began and ended with regularity, but with nothing apocalyptic at the end of a given cycle.

Given the strength of Internet rumors about impending disaster in 2012, the institute is organizing a special round table of 60 Mayan experts next week at the archaeological site of Palenque, in southern Mexico, to “dispel some of the doubts about the end of one era and the beginning of another, in the Mayan Long Count calendar.”

Though some still doubt the brick is a definite reference to the December 21, 2012 or December 23, 2012 dates as possibly signifying the end of the world, as some proponents have theorized, it is interesting nonetheless that a second reference has been found.

Remember the drama that surrounded the Y2K phenomenon? Nothing happened and I would venture to say, nothing will happen either of those dates next December. The Bible was clear in stating that we won’t know the hour when judgment day comes, so why should this be any different? Sounds a lot like Harold Camping’s hogwash.
