Secretive Brothers Pledge $100 Million To Oust Obama

Secretive oil billionaire brothers pledge $100million war chest to oust Obama from White House

Republican supporters led by secretive oil billionaires the Koch brothers have pledged to oust Barack Obama from power - by stumping up a $100million (£63million) war-chest.

David and Charles Koch, worth a combined $50billion, have been joined by 300 of America's wealthiest businessmen in promising the cash to stop Obama from being re-elected.

They met at the conservative brothers' annual three-day Californian retreat, where they gain pledges for non-profit groups that share their libertarian world view.

But it is believed this is the first time the get-together has zoomed in one sole issue.
Sources said an 'alpha-male' mentality of beating Obama at this year's election at all costs soon took over amongst the visitors.

Charles, 76, will put up $40million from his personal fortune, while David, 71, has pledged $20million to the battle.
As individuals can only donate $2,500 to a candidate, the $100million will almost certainly go to one of the independent Republican political action committees.

While they are supposed to be neutral, the committees usually ally themselves to a particular candidate and then use the money to support them.

The brothers' Americans for Prosperity PAC has already spent $6.8million on adverts attacking the president.

The pair have trodden a notoriously secretive path in amassing their wealth. But they started to gain more prominence when they helped launch the Tea Party movement.
They are ranked at numbers 18 and 19 on the Forbes 100 Rich List, and have given more than $100million to right-wing causes.

A total of $55million of that has gone in trying to discredit the science behind man-made climate change.

The brothers are co-owners of energy giant Koch industries, the firm founded by their father Fred in 1940, and have since expanded the business to 2,600 times its inherited size.

Initially involved in oil refining, the company is now one of the biggest firm in the country, producing well-known brands such as Stainmaster carpet, Lycra fiber, Quilted Northern tissue and Dixie paper.

They have two other brothers, 78-year-old Fred and 71-year-old William, who were all involved in litigation against each other in the 1980s and 1990s.

Bristol, Rhode Island, claims it has the nation's oldest Fourth of July celebration
by Associated Press
Thursday July 02, 2009, 9:01 PM
BRISTOL, R.I. -- In July 1785, the citizens of the waterfront town of Bristol, R.I., assembled to heap praise on their newly minted nation and to thank God for helping them survive a fierce assault by the British during the Revolutionary War. ...

...Prayer, speeches and other such "patriotic exercises" have marked the Fourth of July in Bristol every year since 1785 -- allowing the town to lay claim to the nation's oldest Independence Day celebration. ...

...The parade has continued uninterrupted with the exception of a few years -- such as 1881, when President James Garfield was shot. Some events -- like chasing a greased pig around the Common -- have been abandoned, but modern-day fixtures include a concert series, orange crate derby, nighttime ball, a Miss (and Little Miss) Fourth of July pageant -- even a contest recognizing the person who has traveled the farthest.

"Sometimes we think we have red, white and blue running through our bloodstream because of our commitment to the celebration," said parade chairwoman Judy Squires, a lifelong Bristol resident and part of a committee of 110 volunteers that runs the event.

Passing out U.S. Constitutions on July 4th gets group tossed from annual celebration. The Rhode Island Tea Party group says that it has banned from future Bristol 4th of July Parades. Last Saturday's parade, which is the oldest in the country at 224 years, had included a float representing the taxpayer group, which has recently been organizing "Tea Party" type political rallys.

Tea Party spokesperson Marina Peterson says she was contacted by a parade committe member on Wednesday and was told "It is because some members of the RI Tea Party passed out U.S. Constitutions to the crowd. Apparently passing out the US Constitution on Independence Day is an egregious violation of parade rules. This is despite the fact that other floats passed out solicitations for their businesses, which is against the Parade guidelines, and these businesses have NOT been told that they are banned from participating in the future."

Since the parade, which dates back to 1785, is a celebration of America and its cherished freedom, that would have to be eligible for some sort of prize for irony.
