The raid on the Pakistani compound that killed Osama bin Laden on Monday also resulted in the death of his son and presumed heir, Hamza.

The al-Qaeda leader’s youngest son was also his closest confidante and often at his side.

Since he was implicated in the murder of the moderate Pakistani leader Benazhir Bhutto, intelligence agencies believed that Hamza has been groomed as a future leader of al-Qaeda.

“We have been happy just to get the son,” said one Whitehall official. “It’s a real bonus to get them both.”

Now thought to be aged 18, Hamza bin Laden played a propaganda role for al-Qaeda and his father by appearing in a video published in 2001.

Patrick Mercer, a Conservative MP and security specialist, dubbed Hamza the Crown Prince of Terror in 2008.

A video featuring the youngest of the Saudi-born warlord’s 18 sons, was posted on an extremist website to mark the third anniversary of the July 7 London bombings in which 52 people died.

He called for an acceleration in the “destruction” of America, Britain, France and Denmark, the latter singled out for the publishing by its largest selling broadsheet of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

“Oh God, reward the fighters hitting the infidels and defectors. Oh God, guide the youth of the Islamic nation and let them assist with the fighters’ plans,” he said. “God, be pleased with those who want to go for jihad – and blind those who are watching and want to capture them.

“Grant victory to the Taliban over the gangs of infidels.”

Mrs Bhutto, the former Pakistani prime minister, named the teenager as the leader of one of a number of gangs plotting to kill her.

In a posthumous autobiography published after she was assassinated at a campaign rally, Mrs Bhutto said he believed that Hamza was plotting her assassination.

The federal government is warning Canadians abroad to avoid public gatherings or protests that may turn violent in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death at the hands of U.S. forces.

The Department of Foreign Affairs issued its warning a day after U.S. President Barack Obama announced that bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda and architect of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, had been killed during a military operation in Pakistan.

"Canadians residing in or travelling to areas where anti-Western violence could occur are advised to exercise a high degree of caution, monitor local news, avoid public gatherings and demonstrations, and stay away from areas where they may take place, as they could turn violent without warning," the department said.

The agency advised Canadians to consult its website for updated travel reports and warnings, and to register with the Canadians Abroad service in order to more easily access consular advice and assistance.

In the early hours of Monday morning, not long after Obama's announcement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said receiving the news of bin Laden's death gave him a sense of "sober satisfaction" but warned that the al Qaeda leader's death did not necessarily spell the end of international terrorism.

Harper, who hopes to win a third straight term in Monday's federal election as leader of the Conservative party, said bin Laden's death should provide some comfort to the friends and families of the 24 Canadians who were killed on 9/11.

However, Harper cautioned that "sadly, others will take his place" and suggested the fight against international terrorism will not end with the death of one man.

Later Tuesday, the RCMP said it is assessing the news of bin Laden's death to determine if there is reason to believe there is an increased threat to Canadians.

Bin Laden was killed in a U.S. military operation Sunday at a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, about 100 kilometres from Islamabad.

Obama said bin Laden's body was taken into custody by U.S. officials, and there was word later that he had been buried at sea.

New Democrat Leader Jack Layton, who is making a serious bid to become either official opposition leader, or prime minister, said in a statement that the news serves as a reminder of Canada's international responsibilities.

"Tonight, as we recall the horrific events of September 11, we re-commit ourselves to promote Canada's role in the international community as a leading contributor to the world's peace, security and prosperity," Layton said.

He added that the memories of the 9/11 attacks "will be ingrained on our collective memory forever."

The news first came from sources in Afghanistan and Pakistan almost six months ago: the fugitive died in December [2001] and was buried in the mountains of southeast Afghanistan. Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf, echoed the information. The remnants of Osama's gang, however, have mostly stayed silent, either to keep Osama's ghost alive or because they have no means of communication. With an ego the size of Mount Everest, Osama bin Laden would not have, could not have, remained silent for so long if he were still alive. Benazir Bhutto had been addressing rallies in many parts of Pakistan Pakistani former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated in a suicide attack.Ms Bhutto - the first woman PM in an Islamic state - was leaving an election rally in Rawalpindi when a gunman shot her in the neck and set off a bomb. At least 20 other people died in the attack and several more were injured. President Pervez Musharraf has urged people to remain calm but angry protests have gripped some cities, with at least 11 deaths reported. Security forces have been placed on a state of "red alert" nationwide. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack. Analysts believe Islamist militants to be the most likely group behind it. A slim majority of respondents, or 51 percent, said bin Laden's killing had not changed their perception of Obama's leadership. But 29 percent said it made them feel more favorable to him and 13 percent said they now feel much more favorable. Hamas, Fatah, Israel, and the United Nations.

By now, I am sure you are aware of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. But, do you know who Hamas is, other than "the bad guy" in this conflict?

The name "Hamas" is an acronym for the "Islamic Resistance Movement". That says a lot on its own, however, let's look further into Hamas.

Hamas "is a Palestinian Sunni paramilitary organization and political party which holds a majority of seats in the elected legislative council of the Palestinian National Authority." Hamas was created in 1987 and has become popular in Palestinian society by establishing services such as hospitals, libraries, and others throughout the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. "Hamas' charter calls for the destruction of the State of Israel and its replacement with a Palestinian Islamic state in the area that is now Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip". The issues in the Palestinian government run deep and have a seemingly unending timeline. More recently, "The Palestinian National Authority was formed in 1994, pursuant to the Oslo Accords between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the government of Israel, as a 5-year interim body during which final status negotiations between the two parties were to take place but never did. According to the Accords, the Palestinian Authority was designated to have control over both security-related and civilian issues in Palestinian urban areas (referred to


as "Area A"), and only civilian control over Palestinian rural areas ("Area B"). The remainder of the territories, including Israeli settlements, the Jordan Valley region, and bypass roads between Palestinian communities, were to remain under exclusive Israeli control ("Area C"). East Jerusalem was excluded from the Accords." So, what needs to happen here, in addition to many other things, is that the negotiations need to be mandated and oversight by the United Nations must be in place as a peace making middle-man. Additionally, the Israeli settlements should currently remain theirs, according to the Oslo Accords. "The Oslo Accords, officially called the Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements or Declaration of Principles (DOP) was a milestone in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It was the first direct, face-to-face agreement between Israel and political representatives of Palestinians. It was the first time that some Palestinian factions publicly acknowledged Israel's right to exist."

On an international basis, the U.N. should use their power to intervene and uphold this agreement (the Oslo Accords), inclusive of the violence from Hamas and Hamas' power as a result of their victory in parliamentary elections. This is not a U.S. fight, although we are in need of standing up for our allies, which include Israel. However, this is a disturbance that the U.N. needs to pursue as an international peace keeping mission.

"The PA maintains an official uniformed armed service which various sources estimate to include anywhere from 40,000 to 80,000 recruits employing some armored cars, and a limited number carry automatic weapons. Officially termed a "police force", it violates the Oslo Accords which limit the force to 30,000 recruits."

Fatah is also a major political player in the Palastinian government. President Mahmoud Abbas a major player in the Fatah party. In the mid-1950's Abbas "became heavily involved in underground Palestinian politics, joining a number of exiled Palestinians in Qatar, where he was Director of Personnel in the emirate's Civil Service. While there, he recruited a number of people who would become key figures in the Palestine Liberation Organization, and was one of the founding members of Fatah in 1957. Yasser Arafat was among other key members...He (Abbas) is credited with initiating secretive contacts with left-wing and pacifist Jewish groups during the 1970s and 80s, and is considered by many to be a major architect of the 1993 Oslo peace accords (evidenced in part by the fact that he travelled with Arafat to the White House to sign the accords)."

The Palestinian terrorist organization called "Black September", responsible for the Munich massacre was assumed to be an operational cover for Arafat's Fatah group. "Abbas came into conflict with Palestinian militant groups, notably Islamic Jihad and Hamas; his pragmatic policies were opposed to their hard-line approach. However, he made it perfectly clear that he was forced to abandon, for the moment, the use of arms against Israeli civilians inside the green line due to its ineffectiveness; the Abbas doctrine allowed for selective terrorism."

"On December 16, 2006 Abbas called for new legislative elections, to bring an end to the parliamentary stalemate between Fatah and Hamas in forming a national unity government.

On March 17, 2007 a Palestinian unity government was formed incorporating members of both Hamas and Fatah, with Ismail Haniyeh as Prime Minister and independent politicians taking many key portfolios."

Anis al-Qasem, the Palestinian constitutional lawyer who drafted the Basic Law, is among those who publicly declared Abbas' appointment of Fayyad to be illegal."

You can infer from these statements that there is a power struggle that continues in the Palastinian government that does not have a simple answer. When there are two opposing terrorist-type groups, which is the lesser evil? When you have a choice between Hamas and Fatah groups, who do you want in charge? A message to the United Nations...it's pass time to intervene.
