Volcano In Japan About To Blow?

photo
Shinmoedake, a mountain in the Kirishima volcanic range between Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, billows smoke and ash into the air in this recent photo. On Jan. 26, the Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory raised the eruption warning level on the mountain from level 2 -- restricting access to the summit -- to level 3 -- restricting access to the entire mountain. Meanwhile, the city of Kirishima has declared the area within a two-kilometer radius of the summit a no entry zone. (Photo courtesy of the Japan Meteorological Agency and Kagoshima Prefecture)
